Is it just me or is 6P insanely fast on N Preview 5?

I recently took advantage of the sales on the 6P and got myself one again after several months using an S7 Edge as my daily driver. After installing the Android N Preview 5, this device is absolutely flying. I haven't used anything this quick on Android, ever. Is this just my forgetting over the last few months how quick the 6P always was, or has it improved a lot with Android N? Also, battery life, particularly in standby mode is insanely better than it was.

It's pretty quick to me as well. I mean I have the window transitions turned off, but it is pretty quick. One of the beauties of stock Android.

Not just you. It IS really fast on the latest preview.

Google has a history of Nexus devices actually getting/feeling faster with newer OS's.

Both my 6P and 5X feel pretty snappy on the latest preview build.... which doesn't really shock me though. Like Kev says, Google has a track record of making sure that legacy devices get some love when it comes to the latest OS. And they have a year's worth of updates and testing and tweaking... knowing the ins and outs of the processor, etc. My previous phone, the Nexus 6, felt measurably smoother and more nimble with 6.0 on it and looks like the same thing applies now.

It's one of the Nexus line's biggest selling points... while a Nexus phone is in the official support window, Google will actually work on improving it pretty much the entire time rather than cast it into the 'maintenance release' wasteland.

Mine feels a bit peppier (though I have animations turned off) compared to stock MM. I noticed that Doze appears to be much more aggressive. Also, it's a lighter load too with storage before at 11.71 gigs and 9.05 gigs after (this includes everything: photos, apps etc. which didn't change between OS revisions) up about 2.6-something gigs. Not bad.

Battery is holding up pretty good too: Used 30% in 8:40 which averages to 3.5%/hr (2:56 active and 1:48 SoT). Web surfing, news apps, and e-mail only. No gaming or anything else that's CPU-intensive.

Thanks everyone. Good to get confirmation. I haven't had a 6P for several months, so my comparison was stock Marshmallow (by memory) vs. stock Nougat Preview 5. Very nice bonus. Interesting that even with a slower processor and 1GB less RAM than this year's flagships, it still so quick. Optimization of software to a device makes a huge difference as we also know from Apple.

Yes both standby battery and speed of OS version are very nice. No questions about that!

Yes it's every fast this is my first Nexus device and I will continue to buy Nexus going forward.

Definitely, every animation is buttery smooth, better than marshmaollow im o by a bit. Glad to see new OS builds arent regressing speed

Have to agree, the P5 on Nougat is really fast and as an extra bonus, battery life for me is around 10% better on my usual daily routine!! This phone just gets better and better...definately the Muttz Nutz:D

I agree that my 6p is snappier on DP5, but it sure does lag when it opens the mobile app to AC. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed this as well? I thought the purpose of the mobile app was to be more efficient and optimized for mobile devices.

Definitely not just you. I went from the S7 Edge/iPhone 6S+ back to the 6P on the dev preview and this phone is extremely quick. Not that it wasn't always, but there's a noticeable difference on this latest preview. Bodes really well for the final build of Nougat.

Oh, I think there's something wonky with the app at the moment. Little things, like jerky scrolling.. it's not the phone either.

I have a bit of a heating problem with my 6P. It's not bad, but it seems to me it gets a bit warmer than it should. A couple months ago I was on a road trip, and I had Google Maps, Torque, hotspot, and sometimes Play Music or YouTube (background audio) all on at the same time. My phone would get warm enough that it would quit charging. I used to do all that with my Nexus 6, and even have it in a wireless charging holder, and it had no issues with heat.

Has anyone who has had heating issues with the Nexus 6P experienced an improvement with Nougat? I know that the Snapdragon 810 was known to have heat issues, but it seems some devices have more of an issue than others. The Nexus 6P seems to handle it as well or better than other phones with the 810, but it still gets warmer than I've been used to with previous phones.

Much improved in general with Nougat DP5 See my detailed findings here.

Short version: It still gets warm (GSam says up to about 105F) but it happens much less often. Combine that with much more effective Doze and it's like you have a new phone.
