Is it just me or is the fingerprint sensor pretty slow and picky?

I came from a Mate 9 which had the fastest fingerprint sensor I've ever had. My 6P was pretty quick. This 8+ seems to be slow and often requires repetitive pressing.

Is it just me?

The sensor has to be clean, as does your finger. If those conditions aren't met, then yes, it can take multiple attempts.

The fingerprint is what I use the most to unlock my S8 but I still hit my camera lens all the time and constantly have to wipe the lens to take pictures. It's not super quick but it gets the job done. My fastest was on the honor 8 which was lightning quick which I assume your mate 9 to be the same.

I find that always the case with any phone. I even find the facial recognition can be a bit picky especially if i am in a less lighted area at times it doesn't work at all.

My FP usually always works unless sweating a bunch or something. I use a microfiber cloth to wipe my phone / sensor down if need be.

The camera actually prompts you to wipe the lens which is pretty funny bc you know Samsung knew this was a bad place to place the fingerprint sensor if their camera has a prompt to wipe the lens before shooting your picture. Lol. I find that humorous

Came from a Mate 9 as well. Seems a lot of people have good luck- I am having the same issues. And yes, my finger is clean and the phone is clean.

It's just you. Lol, kidding. But seriously, I have not had any issues with my FPS. It's very fast and accurate.

Fastest and most convenient fingerprint sensor? No.
Works well enough? Yes after getting used to it.

It's the size then the placement. Both are poor. It needs to be more rounded but the placement is so poorly picked that it makes a difference too in how accurate it is.

So far in my case the scanner is working every time, better than S7. I like that it pretty much opens all my secure apps

Definitely not just you. I have retrained my FPS a few times but it's still not rock solid like on iPhone, Pixel, or even the S7.

Maybe, but doesn't seem like it. It's also completely stopped working and I've had to restart. It also works almost instantly for apps. Just not unlocking. I just don't use it anymore. Problem solved

Nope not just you. There are times I give up with the FPS and just enter in my pattern.

Mine has been acting a little hokey since Verizon pushed out the July update. Nothing serious, just annoying.

FPS works consistently well for me. Also... Don't burn me at the stake for saying this... I find the placement easy to use.

My FPS works just fine. I've had occasions where it's unreliable, but I've found that cleaning it with my shirt almost always does the trick. I say "almost" because once my FPS wasn't responding and I had to restart my phone.

Off topic, but @uncaged74, I've also found the facial recognition to be a bit finicky. I used to turn on facial recognition when I was outdoors, and use the iris scanner indoors (which was made far easier once they released Bixby Voice). But even in bright light the facial recognition unlock will sometimes behave unpredictably, so I've just defaulted to the iris scanner and FPS.

I hated it at first but after about a week, I got completely used to it and it does not bother me at all now. I still think it is a poor location and I am sure it will be moved on the next model.
