Ok, I know we are not a Legal Forum, but here goes. I went to a store and purchased about $19 worth of food. I tried to pay with a $100 bill as I had 3 $100 bills and $16 in small bills on me. The guy at the counter refused my $100 bill and I had already taken a bite out of my food, so I couldn't return it. I was wondering if it is Legal in the state of NY to refuse $100 bill. I know they can choose not to accept coins and cards, but $100 is Legal Tender.

I had to leave my food, go to 4 different stores to try to change $100.

Any input would be great.

Thanks

Usually businesses have signs that says "We Don't Accept Bills Larger Than ____" - was that sign there?

I don't think it makes illegal for any business to not accept any form of payment.

They should stop printing cash in the first place. Everything should be electronic. I'm sickened by larger businesses that don't take CC's. And I'm even more sickened at Chinese food places that have $15 minimums and when you try to cancel your order are like: "charge $2 more". Uh... no... good bye.

It is leagal for any business to refuse service for any reason so long as laws aren't broken. Simple! Kidding, ha ha, kidding. My business would ACCEPT all forms of payment, but I think getting paid for selling something is just good business.

Pretty soon you will be able to pay directly from your phone.

We can only hope, NFC is one of the few features that would make me jump phones but US carriers aren't buying into it yet. The nice thing is it's a single device to cancel instead of killing off the four credit cards, two debit cards, and whatever else is in my wallet and writing off any cash I need to carry around. Plus history says I'm more likely to leave my wallet at home than my phone... ;)
