Is it possible to have your battery's percentage be displayed on the wake/lock screen ?

Seems counterintuitive to have to open up your phone all the way just to check your battery level. Anyone know if there is a way to add this to the wake screen?

I don't think that there is a built-in feature to do so, but lots of 3rd party apps and widgets that would do so. Here's one link for some choices.

I use Echo Lockscreen, and the battery percentage is on the lock screen.

You can pull the notification shade down while on a lock screen.
