AC Question

I have an HTC 10 which I love overall but hate the Facebook, Google etc. bloatware that not only can I not delete but they update on their own (get message updates available - update apps I want. Later get message the Apps were update (those I left alone and didn't update - have auto update off). Would like to unlock bootloader to rid phone of these but read that doing so would alter security and result in loss of fingerprint scanner function. I don't necessarily want to flash a new ROM but will if that's what's necessary.

Unlocking the bootloader does not allow the removal of apps. You need to root the phone for that. I have also read of devices losing use of the fingerprint scanner after unlocking the bootloader

I have a Verizon HTC 10 have have unlocked my bootloader with Sunshine. I'm using a stock ROM that has been rooted and debloated. (everything stock except I've enabled wifi hotspot, and added system wide ad blocking).

The fingerprint scanner works fine for unlocking the phone and logging into my banking app. I don't use any payment apps, though, so I cannot comment on whether or not something like Android Pay would work. My guess is maybe not, but that's because my ROM is rooted, not because of the unlocked bootloader.

I should also note that I only temporarily flashed TWRP. After flashing TWRP in fastboot, I loaded the recovery (TWRP) and flashed my ROM and other stuff. After a reboot, TWRP gets replaced with the stock recovery. So while I do have an unlocked bootloader and a custom ROM, my recovery is stock. That my be why I haven't had issues with the fingerprint reader as well.

Thanks mrbowlman. I will check this info further. What does this do for HTC updating? Thanks, newbie to this stuff just want a phone without all the garbage. It's good to know that the fingerprint scanning function to unlock the phone is unaffected. May ask for more assistance on the process if that's ok ;)

This is great to hear. I'm considering getting the HTC 10 is a great deal turns up - If I can root/ROM it on Verizon I can get about 80% of what the Pixel is offering, but with an SD card, better build, and better audio.

I have mine currently unlocked and rooted with the viper ROM. My fingerprint works with out any issues. Viper even has a tweak to allow you to use your fingerprint even after a restart.

Android pay does not work on a rooted phone. There have been a few work arounds but google closes them as quickly as they pop up. There are some banking apps that dont work as well. Also snapchat won't work unless you download an older apk sign in then update. Pokémon Go won't work either.

Check out the XDA forum for the 10. All the things you need to know are in there.
