Is it really worth it to switch from my Palm Pre?

Here's my thought on the subject. I was a launch Palm pre owner. Now I sport an Evo Shift. Do I like Android? Much more now with Gingerbread. And secondly, I am ruined for HTC Sense. Actually jones'n for Sense 3 and an overclocked kernel so I can run it

webOS is like your first girlfriend. She lasted several months or maybe even a year, but you moved on. You'll never forget her, but change was necessary. Just remember, Matias Duarte is now with Google and is hard at work improving the Android user experience. Yes, he was the one who pretty much made webOS what it was that we fell in love with. It just never took off. Can't explain it. It just wasn't meant to be I guess.

Ok, I am on the verge of picking up this new EVO 3D but I'm definitely on the fence. I LOVE WebOS but I'm getting tired of the constant lag and MANY glitches. I own a launch day Palm PRE and I'm sure/hoping some of these issues will get worked out with the impeding arrival of the PRE 3 but of course, there's no release date. The Touchpad looks promising especially with the Touch-to-Share integration feature with the PRE 3. The specs of the EVO 3D simply looks amazing. I'm SO torn!

Please provide some "real" reasons to switch or not. Don't just say things like the EVO or PRE rocks!

I was a first day Pre owner as well. Received the EVO 3D today and can't really say I miss much. It is still taking me a while to get adjusted to the size of the phone. This phone is so quick and responsive. I hated how long it used to take the Pre to boot up. I have rebooted the EVO 3D and just laugh at how I wasted two years of my life with crap. Call quality is no isssue, signal strength is much better, functionality of this phone is AWESOME!!!! HP will probably never see MY money again.

I was a Palm Pre evangelist for a long time. Talked my wife, my dad, my brother, three friends at work and anybody else I could find into buying a Pre. The reasons I am switching to the Evo 3D are:

1) Can't stand the way HP has taken over Palm. They are more interested in selling the Touchpad than selling phones. This is a huge mistake IMO, but HP is a computer company. They think they can sell the tablet and then people will want the phone. I believe the order is the other way around. People will buy the tablet because of the phone. They still haven't announced a release date or carrier relationships for the Pre3?!?!? It was announced just after CTIA, but again, they're focused on the Touchpad, not the phone. I don't want a tablet. I want a smartphone. (And with a 4.3 inch screen it's practically a tablet anyway.)

2) I will not switch from Sprint. Even while everyone else was moaning and groaning about Sprint's customer service, they have always treated me right, fairly, and pretty much given me anything I've asked for. Since I'm a Gold Premier customer (over 10 years), I get perks the other carriers don't offer. We haven't seen any rumors, clues, leaks, etc. that Sprint is getting the Pre3. I can't wait around forever when the crappy hardware that was the Pre- is falling apart in my hand. The original Evo has been the flagship device for the past year and it's still being upgraded. I can't imagine the Evo 3D is going to be anything but the true successor for that title.

3) webOS is the best mobile OS on the market, and I think it still can be. But with Gingerbread, Google is making gains and Sense 3.0 seems really cool. I will have to get used to Android multi-tasking and the software keyboard, but those things can be adjusted to. webOS multi-tasking is absolutely sweet. I love being able to switch between apps with just a flick. That's the thing I'm hoping Android has improved the most from previous versions of the OS.

4) Apps - even if you only use a few apps, having so many to choose from is exciting. Homebrew is what kept Palm and the Pre- going. Now even the homebrew crew is being forced to upgrade to the new Enyo SDK along with the regular developers. Since we have no info on new hardware for Sprint, why am I being left behind? I have a perfectly good upgrade available and I will use it tomorrow.

5) At the keynote presentation in Feb, one of the presenters said that people who had the original Pre "would be taken care of." Once again, no info about what that means. We kept Palm afloat those first months until HP came along. Will be taken care of? Who knows? No one is talking about that. Again, all they care about is releasing the Touchpad.

6) I use most of the Google apps, Gmail, etc, so why not use the OS that is most optimized for those apps?

I had hopes that HP would come along and really make webOS shine. To me, all they have done is take the luster off. I will miss webOS, but I think the opportunities are greater with Android than with webOS. So tomorrow at 1pm, I have an appointment with the Best Buy Mobile staff to switch both my wife and I to HTC Evo 3D's. So long webOS!

I was lucky enough to get an Evo 3D yesterday and let me tell you I have not even looked at my day 1 Pre. I honestly am not missing the cards as much as I thought I would. Widgets are really neat ans Sense 3.0 is FULLY cutomizable...you can literally setup each screen exactly how you want and there are 7 screens per scene. A scene is basically just a set of screens cusomized in a certain way...they are preloaded but you can customize it however you want.

The Evo 3D is the fastest phone I have seen...it is so responsive and does exactly what I ask it to without complaining...or slowing down.

Don't listen to this gimmick crap the 3D is neat but even if you never use it this is the best phone available on Sprint and I would agrue it being one of the if not the best available phones on the market. If anything touch to share is more a gimmick than the 3D...I carry a phone for convenience and to me carrying a tablet sized device is not convenient at all. When at a movie I can search the web just fine no need to have a tablet around to make the experience more enjoyable.

You are concerned about the Evo 3D size...don't be...my wife has an original Evo and it is beastly...the Evo 3D is a more stremlined "fit" version of the original Evo. It is not as wide and a little taller making it easier to hold in one hand and use.

When I first started researching Android and Sense I was concerned about the multitasking...it may not be as great as WebOs but it is not that far behind either. There really is no question whether or not you should upgrade...the Pre is almost 3 years old and has had little to none support for it. The Evo 3D on the day it was released had an update available(albeit one that really screwed more than it fixed).

Also, 200,000 APPS I am going to post it again for dramatic effect 200,000. I can't tell you how nice it is to browse the Android app store brother...that alone is reason to get away from HP and the Pre lineup and pitiful 10,000 apss with maybe a handful of useful apps.

As for me too...I was holding out for the Pre 3. I love the multi-tasking on the WebOS far better than the iOS and Android...so I thought. Got my EVO 3D yesterday and well...could not be more happy that I made the switch! I wish HP WebOS the best and maybe in the future I might go back, but as for now, I am completely happy that I switched.

"Two cups and a string" - OUCH! What are some of the advantages of this phone over the PRE?

I'm not going to read through all of the other posts yet, but I want to tell you that I am upgrading tomorrow from an original launch day Palm Pre to an Evo 3d. The reasons are endless dude.

1. Far better screen and resolution. The pre's screen looked great and still looks good, but it is just outmatched by this one. Plus I heard this screen is behind gorilla glass, which is a godsend. My 2nd pre (im on my 3rd now...build quality is terrible) got its screen chipped the SECOND I got in my car after getting it as a replacement to my first just because it slid off of my passenger seat...so pissed.

2. Way faster. This our phone runs at 500mhz factory, and up to 1Ghz if you overclock it, but your phone will pay the price, my 2nd pre died because of overclocking among other issues I think. This new one has a dual core processor, and is factory 1.2 ghz, which if Rooted probably could be brought up to its natural 1.5ghz (they nerfed the speed for battery reasons)

3. Android. I was on the fence about switching too because I LOVE WebOS. But we got left behind man. Once they stopped rolling out the updates and refused to bring any of their other phones to Sprint, we were left behind. Hell, even some of the original android smartphones are getting updated still. Plus, the android app catalog is super sweet, all the awesome apps my buddies have been playing with I now get to try out for myself. I loved WebOS, but its app store was and is garbage. And Sense 3.0 looks so cool, plus visual voicemail which I have to download an app for on the Pre.

4. Expandable memory. I HATED how the pre was a locked 8gb with no option for expansion. I have 22 gigs of music, and have to fit my favorites on to an 8 gb player? Made it tough. I just bought a 32gb Class 10 micro sd card, and Im going to slap it into that baby first second I have that phone, load it with all the music and movies I want and still have space left over.

5. Dedicated camera shutter button, plus the option of 3D. Whether you like the 3D or not, you have the option of using it, which is still nice. And the camera on this blows away our Pre's.

Honestly, there are more reasons too, like the 4G speeds rivaling broadband, the wireless N that our phones so noticeably lack, but I think any one of those is a reason to upgrade over our phones. The next Palm, er, excuse me, HP phone just isn't worth waiting for.

my friend is getting the 3d tomorrow and i just got mine today, he hung up on me when i was telling him how amazing this phone is. He has plans to brutally murder his pre this weekend (were recording it in 3d btw) if you have ever used google maps on the pre imagine what its like to click maps and within a second be able to move around. My friend has his overclocked to 1ghz numerous patches to make it functional. So lets make a list!!

now before you think i am a android fanboy i got the pre a month after launch and loved it. Ive actually developed apps for it, and ive help palm with the sale of about 7 pre's but once i got the evo4g last year i feel sorry for hpalm and anyone stuck on that side. I personally promise you that you will fall in love with the absolute speed and really everything about this phone. Buy it and if you dont like it for some reason (your crazy lol) return it and go back to the pre. It was a great phone but bad support and dare we say marketing (creepy pale lady comes to mind) just ruined everything. WebOS had enormous potential to be a great os however now i feel like they have slipped too far behind and they will never truly catch up. Theres a reason 400,000+ android devices are activated daily!!!

So far the only thing I have encountered is iTunes support. It was extremely convenient to just sync my Pre with the old version of iTunes and update my songs. Now I am trying to adjust to Doubletwist and all those other less convenient options. But so far that's all. I am going to miss the webOS multitasking, but it looks like the 3D can multitask all of the stuff I would be multitasking on the Pre anyway, so that won't be that bad.
Ill tell you what I am not going to miss though, my Pre taking 5 minutes to start up. Mothereffing ridiculous.

That's very comforting! The boot time of the Pre IS absolutely ridiculous! How long does it take for the E3D to do a cold boot?

fastboot enables the evo to boot up in like 10 seconds, however a full power on is about 35 seconds it seems, maybe even less, i think ill time it really quick lol

10 year palm loyalist, Pre minus in the first week. I miss the Pre multi tasking I miss the touchstone.

I think I am really going to like the 3D, but there is a short learning curve.

I got my 3D today, Issues activating it forced me to go to the sprint store. I mentioned that it would be nice to have a screen protector. She said she would check and see if she could sell them before tomorrow. She came back with over 1/2 dozen cases. I ended up with the Otter box defender for the 3D. It rocks.

have you looked into using google music? It's free while in beta for 20,000 songs. Likely will be price competitive w/ Amazon when they finalize. Or alternatively, switch to amazon mp3 =)

Well, I dunno....

Is it worth to switch from a Pre? What if I told you you'll probably never see the "Sorry, too many cards" screen again. Or maybe you'll never have to watch the same icon slowly throb waiting for some app to load (the Palm Pre equivalent of the peepee dance). Or probably you'll always have some decent support from a maunfacturer, OS, app developer that really gives a rip about providing support for a product you might be invested in for the next couple of years. Hmmm, lemme think about it... Might need some time on this one... Hard choices.... Well, I suppose it'll be a little worth it! /sarcasm

Definitely takes some getting used to. I prefer a physical keyboard but the Pre ruined the vertical slider for me. I was already hoping HP would release a tablet phone. I really like the size of the screen.
