Is my battery reaching its end of life?

Hello

I purchased an extended battery from Amazon about half a year ago, the Hyperion 3800 mah with NFC. At first the battery was great, averaging about 13-16 hours per day with about 5+ hours screen time. I ran the procedures of killing the battery at least 3-4 times and charging it fully.

Recently I noticed I am now averaging about 9-11 hours per day and I have to charge it a little bit to make it through the entire day. I recently switched back to the stock battery to see how well that was holding up and I averaged around the same (9 hours).

I am running Cyanogen mod 10.1 Version 20130314 Nightly, which explains how my stock battery life has improved since I modded my Galaxy Nexus but makes me wonder about my extended battery. I primarily use 3G unless I really want a strong connection, then I switch to 4G, and NFC is always off; I even froze Gmaps because it was being persistent . Another thing I noticed is when I am using it the battery tends to drop faster ( like it should ) but if I don't touch it after a bit, it regains some of the lost charge. For example, it stated it had 8% charge left, I left it alone for about 10 minutes and it was back at 10%.

Is there any other way to find out if the battery is failing?

Thanks!

Generally the battery will hold charges less as it ages. It is natural and not a sign of imminent failure. I would however advise not to purposely discharge a new battery. Lithium batteries do not develop a memory and do not like to be discharged completely. They will fail if left in that state for too long. That is one of the reasons that the phone will automatically shut itself off if the charge gets too low.

So I shouldn't go through those draining cycles with my phone?

No, just charge it when it needs to be charged. Nicad batteries are the ones you discharge because they tend to develop memories after a while.
