Is my S9+ camera defective?

So, if you guys don't like the camera, which phone are you switching to?

I think I will save money and keep my S7 for now. To spend flagship money, I'd need to feel my next phone is a major improvement, especially with regards to the camera, which is the most important thing for me. Right now both the S9 and PX2 have flaws which would annoy me too much. I'll see what happens in 6 months time with the Note9 and the Pixel 3, or I might even wait a whole year to see what they do with the S10...

I remain very impressed with the S9+. But I understand why some folks are less so. What I would suggest though before making any rash decisions one way or the other, is watching this comparison on YouTube, which I think of the comparisons is about the most balanced one that highlights some of the concerns raised hear about color. It shows though that whether its better or worse varies significantly based on a number of factors. https://youtu.be/ZEPOwKLh-90

I think if I HAD to change phones right now, I would get the Note8 or the Pixel 2 XL. It seems to have better colours, less washed out shadows and sharper pictures. The bokeh effect is so much better too. The loss of detail on the S9 for the skin tones, I see as a major flaw (to the point I thought my phone was faulty!). I'd rather have darker shots in low light than shots that are lighter but with washed out details. However as I said, seeing as I don't have to buy a new phone right now, I think I will just wait for 6 or 12 months and see what the next gen phones are like...

I think your last point is spot on. People using that f1.5 lens don't realize how shallow the depth of field is with that wide open aperture. There will be things in sharp focus but objects just in front or behind this in focus field will start to blur and soften.

I think what they would need to do in future is have a triple aperture, say f/1.5 + f/1.8 + f/2.2 for example. The gap between f/1.5 and f/2.4 is just too much to have nothing in between. Most photos would be taken at f/1.8 (including lowish-light), f/2.2 would be for really bright shots, and f/1.5 would only be rarely used in VERY dark situations.

If that's not technically feasible, then a third camera might be an option as is seen in some of the Chinese manufacturers. Essentially have the two cameras of the S9 and in addition to that have the same camera as the S8.

I'm not sure there would be enough room on a Samsung though, as their camera units are so much larger than the competition (unless they start putting the fingerprint sensor underneath the display). By the way, does anybody know why Samsung camera units are so much bigger than any other phone manufacturer?

I wouldn't recommend switching to the Note 8 if battery life is important to you. I had the Note 8 and the Pixel 2 XL, stayed with the Note 8 in the end despite the better battery life and camera on the Pixel, because the screen on the XL2 is terrible relative to the Samsung phones. I now switched to the S9+ primarily because of the battery life. It is indeed way better than the Note 8. If that's not important, I highly recommend both phones, and the decision then becomes is screen quality more important than camera or vice versa. Ir screen quality is more important, the Note's camera is excellent and more than good enough for a phone. If camera is king, nothing comes close to he Pixel 2/ XL. Nothing period.

Yeah in low light I definitely see a loss of detail with the S9+. Took the same picture vs my Note 8 and the N8 is definitely sharper. Even switching back to 2.4 I'll get a little more detail from the S9+ but the post processing just ruins the details. I hope they fix this with a software update.

Both are crappy and tons of lens flare on the S9+

Not sure how you can think the Pixel is crappy. Their is detail in the cat hair as well as the depth detail in the Seth Rollins cardboard cutout in the back.

But the lensflare is a continuous issue I'm seeing with the S9 and not sure if I have a defected camera .

The S9 shows lensflare and a washed out picture that lacks detail and vibrant colours, just like I had with mine. The PX2 is a lot better, with more vibrant colours, more detail and deeper blacks. However it is not perfect in this instance, as the cat's fur does lack definition. It's not very well focused and could be a lot sharper.

Below is the sort of picture I can achieve with my old S7 indoors with decent lighting. I've not seen a single picture taken with the S9 which looks as sharp as this.

Hmmm ok so I had the same issue but it was resolved.
I know this sounds silly I just had to clean the lens super good.
Ok so at first I was like WTF these pictures suck. My S8 focus better then this
and took better shots in any situation. I cleaned the lens with a soft cloth and
was still having the issue. I Then took some Alcohol and rubbed it all over
the Lens with the soft cloth and then took another clean cloth and swiped it clean.
After that pictures were great. I dunno maybe some heavy smudge was stuck on
the lens which I could not see or clean without Alcohol.
Might not be the same results for you, but give it a shot before returning the phone.

I cleaned it (albeit not with alcohol - too late for that now as I already returned it), but the results were the same.

Challenge - Can anyone with a S9 post a pic of a pet as sharp as the one above (where you can see every small hair razor sharp)? In low light even better.

The picture you took was fantastic with s7. I know my pictures didn't do justice but the conditions weren't good. In my basement with the TV the only source of light in that area.

I like taking the odd picture. I hope these issues are ironed out when the real galaxy gets released in September.
These threads fill me with dead. Along with the screen ones.

What detail ? Maybe on your phone it looks ok, however I use a 10.5 “ tablet for viewing all the forums that I visit.
The blacks are crushed and the whites are smeared (noise reduction maybe) into nothing.
