Is Samsung slow to provide updates to Android software?

I am considering getting a Samsung Galaxy S7 but have read negative opinions re: Samsung's slowness in providing updates to Android operating system.

Historically - yes. For example - the S7 is still on Nougat (and will be for seemingly the foreseeable future) while the Nexus 6P is on the latest release of Oreo, the 6P was released a year before the Galaxy S7. My Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 (considered a "flagship level" tablet) is still vulnerable to the KRACK WiFi exploit that was patched by Google 2 months ago! Even last year's flagship(s) (Galaxy S8 and Note 8) are JUST receiving the Oreo update.
