Is Skipsoft the only option to root?

I've been waiting for more information, since I normally prefer to install TWRP and root manually. However, information has been limited.

I am guessing it may be because the phones are still so new.

Has anyone rooted using anything besides the Skipsoft Toolkit?

TWRP is not available for the Pixel and won't be for a month or so. They have to figure out how to decrypt the system partitions since the Pixel has the unique dual systems for seemless updates.

The best way to root it is the use chainfire's method:

[ROOT] SuperSU | Google Pixel XL

TWRP RC1 is out. Still needs some polishing but works just fine for root and roms.
