Is Task Manager the best way to close applications to free up memory?

Why do you need to manually free up memory?

Android will kill background apps when it needs more ram.

IMO, you only need to manually kill an app if it's misbehaving. (ex: Yelp keeping the GPS on even after you exit the app)
