Is the 5G models worth considering now in 2020?

Would like to find out where you heard that.
That was based on some user feedback here when plans first started becoming available. That no longer seems to be the case with at least the major carriers in the U.S. Verizon did have plans to charge extra, but I found articles saying they later decided against it.

I did some research just to make sure I would not be charged. So I called a Verizon store where 5G is in the area and they said that what they offer are a few different unlimited plans. One is JUST 4G and regardless of phone all you will get is 4G, then they have some 5G unlimited plans and for the current time, the 5G, $10.00 fee is being waved. And I was told they would not be charging based on the phone, but charging based on the plan.
So, so I have to take it for what it is; information from a Verizon store rep. Could be wrong and possibly they have it right.

However, the problem with Verizon is their MMwave netword does not penetrate into buildings all that well, very limited in areas (almost down to separate blocks in an area) so I see why they will be discounting the 10 bucks for a time and maybe a long time.

For me, I live in the middle of nowhere in an area that only Verizon can supply service and I use US Mobile that runs off Verizon towers. And I called them out of curiosity and they will not ever offer 5G for a year.

And I thought I read that T- mobile would not charge extra for 5G, but I might be wrong there.

Time will tell, but I guess I'm safe and will not be charged extra.

The only carrier in the US which is offering 5G that is relevant in a meaningful way to any number of people currently is T-Mobile - a very large portion of their customers are very frequently able to use it. That said, it's the low band, so the improvements aren't massive, but they are there. Those people going from an older model to one of these may see a dramatic improvement in coverage, though, if their older models didn't support the 600Mhz band, which offers noticeably better in-building coverage and extended outdoor range from towers.

Thanks.

They are still trying to charge the extra $10 for 5G, so I guess either they changed their mind again or flat lied in the articles I saw saying they decided not to. I was just running through a pre-order for the new LG V60 to what the costs and such were, when a notice about the 5G surcharge popped up. The good news is it wasn't being required despite being a 5G capable phone. They may waive the fee like you said, but I didn't ask them about it yet. If I pull the trigger I will, but a waived fee means they could start charging later on.Screenshot_20200326-070058.jpeg

What is this that the 5G plan is being based on the phone.

That sounds evil.
What does the phone have to do with if you will be charged for 5G or not.

And why is it that if you have a 4G unlimited plan that they want to charge you more for a 5G plan.

The carriers need to get up and install equiptment.
They are abourt 2 yrs behind with 5G.
Get the equiptment up and running or everybody should go to somebody that will and not charge extra for it,

Where I live. It will take years for them to ever come to the country.
Here you do good if your phone works.
