Is the camera any better?

I know who you were responding to. It's a public forum. And, I still see it in photos of my cats sleeping, and not moving. Over-processed. Too much smoothing. Samsung is known for this. And, I don't want to use manual mode.

There is no way for any of us to know much about the S20 camera until the phone is released. But early word I'm hearing is very good. New sensors, and new AI technology when it comes to processing. We'll see in just a few weeks.

I must be one of the few that thinks Samsung has a better camera than Google.

On paper the S20 camera is greatly improved, without reviews it's hard to tell how much better it actually is. At the very least we know it has significantly better zoom compared to the S10/Note10.

I don't really care for Pixel cameras either. Their supposedly great night shots look completely fake and unnatural to me. I don't really like what their processing does to skin tones either. I mean sure, some of the photos I've seen are great, especially of landscapes and other scenery type photos, but overall when I see more candid shots I don't feel they're any better than other phones.

Photography is somewhat subjective, and I'm not one of those people that zoom in as far as the camera allows to look at minute details. Pixel (not referring to the phone) peepers drive me a little nuts sometimes. I don't care if I can't zoom into a parking meter 50 ft away from the actual subject and read the meter. I care about the subject of the photo.

Manual mode wouldnt eliminate smoothing anyway.Steange, I'm not having that issue taking pictures of my dog.

I think the Galaxys do certain things better and likewise for Pixel and iphone. As you probably realize automode has its drawbacks. The Pixels seem to shine in that arena. The new Galaxys will be a major improvement in lots of areas due to the increase in sensor size. Automode remains to be seen.

Blind tests have actually shown that Pixel doesn't always win. I agree with your thoughts on Pixel peeping but a good zoom still has its place.

I haven't either. And I've only found over smoothing on the selfie camera. And that's because customers in Korea like the Samsung smoothing/beauty effect.

But I find that the back camera strikes a good balance.

The new sensor will gather a lot more light than the previous wave of sensors. Light is a major factor in photography so it can only improvement in that arena. It can eliminate the need for heavy computational processing in some instances. The verdict on Auto mode remains to be seen.

Lower light shots may be an issue for some which the larger sensors should help to mitigate.

Auto is always a mixed bag, both the Galaxy and Pixel produce some strange results at times. Pixel creates a lot of nice looking photos, but they also look fake and over processed to me.

Personally my Note 9 opens in pro with everything set to auto. This way I can immediately see the shutter speed and ISO along with focus points and if I'm not happy with the image I have the RAW file to quickly tweak in lightroom on my phone. I don't always agree with how the jpeg is rendered.

There is a link in the other thread that has some sample comparison to pixel and iPhone, the results were not great but these are test units I'm guessing the real units shipped to people will be much better

What makes you think they will be much better? Surely even if they are test units, not much can be done?

Indoor motion blurring always killed it for me and the reason why I am back on pixel 3 xl. If Samsung solved that with their S20 line, they will win me back.

Maybe just wishful thinking lol, I have heard reviewers mention this in their review of test units that sometimes they are not quite as fune tuned as the real units

I don't expect the S20 to compete with Google where it comes to photography. Anyone expecting that is living in a dream world. Google pretty much builds the Pixel line around their cameras.

But Samsung should be able to match what Apple has done with the iPhone 11 and then some.

Let's wait until someone reviews the final software. We allow every other OEM that courtesy.

Because of the sensor size I may actually experiment with RAW files if I find the auto inadequate or I don't shoot in manual. Not on a routine basis but if I want to salvage something. Of course that wont help where HDR is required.
