Is the evo 4g still worth buying?

I finally upgraded from am old legacy plan to an everything data plan. Finally, I can get a new phone. However, can't get the upgrade for another year. Is the Evo 4g still worth buying? I would be getting a used one from ebay and it looks like it's around $150. My old phone is a Touch Pro 2 with a 528GHz processor which drags and drags the phone along. I'd hate to feel excessively outdated right after buying the phone.

Yes, its still worth getting especially if you find a good deal on Ebay. The phone will be supported by developers for a good amount of time if you decide to root. I believe there are early ICS builds for the Evo 4G that will help get you through to the next upgrade.

I agree that the EVO is still a good device to acquire, especially if you root it, but I question the wisdom of spending $150 for one with a broken screen. Betting it will be expensive to fix out of warranty and DYI

$150 for an Evo4G with a broken screen is not a good deal at all on eBay. But it is definitely still a good phone and has good support behind it too.

Costs about 15 for a digitizer screen replacement on ebay. I've done a few. Keep in mind digitizer not LCD.

Stores will repair for 25 to 40. Search craigslist.

Also keep in mind to buy an Evo with a CLEAN ESN. If you buy one with a bad ESN, then it cannot be activated on any other plan until the original owner clears up their debt with Sprint.

As for the Evo, I think it'll be a great phone to last another year until your next upgrade. Around mid next year, Sprint should be releasing some LTE phones which is what you'll want to jump on. WiMAX will lose support sometime in 2013~2014. No new towers will be put up in the mean time since Clearwire is running exceptionally low on funds due to lack of support.

I loved my Evo. Best phone I could ever have. Great dev support, awesome ROM's, and great performance (for a now mid-range Android).

This is still a great phone for under $200. In my opinion, the only outdated part is that there's no LTE.

I couldn't agree with you guys more, the EVO is still an awesome phone. Heck even if you think its tad slow, just root and over clock. I don't think any phone I get for quite a long time is going to have the wow factor that the EVO gave me, definitely pick it up man...great phone.

I was fortunate to get an insurance replacement Evo 3D and no longer have my EVO 4G.

I am hoping I can hold out for an LTE phone when my upgrade is available in April 2012.

I just bought a used one on ebay about 3 weeks ago. $173 clean ESN, delivered, and several extras included too. The phone is still very "current" technology wise (particularly when it's rooted).

I think I can say this without getting flamed to much....I think the EVO has the biggest and best community around it. I honestly can't think of a more popular Android phone ever. Maybe the original Droid...maybe, but the dev community for the OG EVO is second to none.

I had an EVO for about a year and loved it except for the hardware issues. I moved on to a Nexus S. I will say that you should try them both out. The only ways the EVO is better is expandable memory and .3" on the screen. The Nexus S is superior in every other way. Both are very good phones, but I wouldn't spend too much on either at this point.

Sorry about the delay, I would have answered this sooner if I had seen it. The best way I CA explain what "root" is....you know how you have administrator access on your PC from the get for? That's basically what rooting is, gaining admin status in he system. With this access you can change just about any part of the system you'd like. Such as the ROM, kernel, kernel governor, upgrade and downgrade your radios and in some cases change the network it can run on. Hope that sheds some light on your question.
