unless it has a software upgrade or a LTE/wimax chip inside, i dont see this being a great 4g phone if clearwire and sprint are thinking LTE within the near future

Has Sprint mentioned any plans to go to LTE in the near future? I haven't heard anything to that effect. I doubt they would be pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into getting the 4g systems up and running, then planning to switch over to LTE as soon as they do.

The investment of time, labor, equipment, development, etc. etc. is proof to me that Sprints current 4G setup will be used for quite some time.

And if they ever DO change up down the road, I'm rather sure your 2 year EVO contract will qualify for the upgrade program by then.

Sprint still not ruling out LTE, says it's not 'mutually exclusive' to WiMAX

The fact that Sprint is welcoming LTE vendors to respond to its RFP for upgrading its legacy CDMA network is no surprise -- in fact, it's no different than the line that the carrier has been taking for well over a year now. What is a bit of a surprise, though, is that it appears to be every bit as ambivalent about the direction of its 4G technology path as ever. The current RFP is strictly for an upgrade of Sprint's "core" network, meaning its legacy (if you can call 2G / 3G "legacy") footprint comprised solely of CDMA; its WiMAX assets aren't affected this time around. In fact, the company's VP of product and technology development, Kevin Packingham, went on record with Light Reading this week saying that it doesn't "see WiMAX and LTE as being mutually exclusive" -- in other words, these guys could end up doing both in the long term. We appreciate Sprint's willingness to accept the fact that LTE's picking up momentum as the global 4G standard, but considering the overwhelming expense involved in building out a new network, is the notion of a two-pronged strategy the right call?

This forum is broken to pieces. Needs to be fixed.

I've never seen such a buggy forum in my life.

i wonder if ignorant people would stop flaming peoples threads

How am I the ignorant one when you asked the stupid question?

Here is the answer to your question

Sprint knows that the other cell companies are going LTE. Sprint knows that its a small effort to switch their WiMAX towers to LTE. Sprint knows that if WiMAX doesnt take off that they can match other carriers LTE networks with little effort. Sprint is simply saying that its an option on the table should they need to use it. By the time this happens, there will be other phones out that you will want other than the Evo, so don't sweat it.

Was that so hard?

I've have also read this on a few sites... so no this is not a stupid question. And I do think you have a valid concern if you plan on keeping your phone for a long time. I'm not worried about it though because I know I'll be upgrading my phone again before I even get 4G in my area.

These forums are great for finding answers for your concerns and questions but what really irritates me is how people on here can be such jerks. Why is it so hard to respond in a polite way, even if you think it's a stupid question??!!

Unless you are the type of person that is still using a Treo 650 or 700, the EVO will wear out it's welcome long before LTE lights up at Sprint.

Clearwire is not moving away from 4G til at least 2012, and Sprint is "keeping its options open". We should be able to get at least 2 yrs out of this phone, not including the time allotted to phase out Wimax -- Wimax to LTE is a software update on the towers, but not the phone, CMIIW.

Exactly...I'm sure there will be something bigger (hopefully not literally) and better come June 4th next year when its time to upgrade again :)

Personally, i dont think it's something you should worry about. Just like Android G1, who says it's very successful phone, but still it's in the market, and it is still popular.

Its not keeping the phone for 2 years that bugs me, its the resale value. Like some stations that have ethanol but government is looking to mandate hydrogen in 2012 as a possibility to replace existing ethanol and spread it quickly. So my ethanol car is stuck with 3g(dino gasoline) or upgrade to the bmw m3 that has hydrogen fuel

No more whining, you can just wait till the phone you believe it's "official" 4G phone. No hard feelings as long as you comfy and patient enough for that.
