I don't know how many press release units there were worldwide... 50? Maybe a dozen or so US? 4 out of however many had issues in the US within say a week. They recalled them a little after a week. I did post someone in Europe had debris under his screen right before he had to return his so that's 5. And then all the units were returned.
It's common practice of press getting units to play with and write about before release is nothing new. Happens so many times a year with so many models. How often do you hear people mention even 1 or 2 incidences when it happens? Rarely. So to keep on saying only 4... you can try to do the math all you want... 4 of 12, 4 of 50, 4 within one week, 5 within 9 days... it was bad and it does point to something amiss.
And... Samsung has used the word "defect" when studying the old unit when saying they have a fix now.
The question I would like to pose is...
Just imagine how many more reports we may have gotten if they were allowed to have them for more than 9 days??
Imagine 900,000 to a million units released to consumers that actually spent $2k with this "defect."
Man, after ifixit showing there teardown (and that Samsung asked to be taken down) and showing that gaping exposed hole just inviting debris to get in... how did it ever really get into final production?
But again I think Samsung dodged a bullet that issues were found this way and look forward to seeing there fixes. It makes it a better phone.

Probably but who knows. There were a lot of people who said their devices worked just fine. No problems at all.
