Is the HTC 10 priced too high?

Having it at $399-$499 would make it more enticing for some more potential customers. But there's another issue to that as well.

At that price point, HTC will have to contend with more competitors like Moto, OnePlus, the plethora of Chinese OEMs and others like the Nexus 6P. Assuming the HTC 10 will be exactly the same as it is now if it's sold at that price point, then it would beat (almost?) all of them based on the phone alone.

The problem is that HTC is in a heavily dire situation financially. Their revenue has dropped by over 60% in Q1 2016 compared to the same quarter last year. That's a gigantic drop and the one thing they need is a healthy profit margin just to break even.

While selling the HTC 10 at $399-$499 would shift more units, in order to maintain their bottom line to ensure that the company makes enough profit quickly to stay afloat, they may have to make some compromises to maintain their margins at that price point. They can still make a profit if they keep the phone the same but sell it at a lower price. They'll just do so much more slowly if they don't shift more units. And we also don't know how much more units HTC will sell at that lower price. HTC just isn't as well-known as the big boys and without adequate marketing, we don't know if regular consumers who don't follow sites like AC will even know they exist and make great phones without adequate marketing. It does make it more enticing when looking at both in the store, I'll agree. We just don't know if they'll sell more of them at that price point just to stay afloat. Financial stuff is unpredictable.

HTC doesn't have a parent company that has a boatload of spare cash to handle any losses like Lenovo + Motorola, nor is it a major conglomerate like Samsung and LG. Their financial situation is more complicated than I could explain, and something tells me that while selling their phones at OnePlus-level prices would shift more units, it wouldn't do much to sweeten their bottom-line.

Really, what they sorely need is better marketing. Get the word out. Convince consumers that the HTC 10 is worth the money in whatever way possible. And maybe give it a small price drop to maybe $650 or $600 about 2 months after release?

Just my 2 cents.

They are fine doing what they are doing with the HTC 10 lets not forget that HTC will be making the next few Google Nexus phones which will also get their name out there to the masses look what the Nexus did for every brand that created one. It basically made huawei a household name in North America. HTC will be fine if the trend continues which I am sure it will.

They need to be fine, because their financial status isn't so healthy right now.

If HTC were a sick person, I'd say they're pretty darn close into being shifted into the ICU.

The HTC 10 looks like a brilliant phone. That's why I'm hoping it sells well.

You used a coupon. For those who don't use the coupon or can't use the coupon, it's still $699.

Nice try.

Who are the those that can't use the same promo code they have it for every region that the device is sold in , buying it from HTC I'm sorry ma'am or sir but you are reaching and doing it bad. It's not with it at this point to keep responding. It's like a bad episode of Naked and Afraid have a good one friend.

To be fair the price still can be caught for the coupon price. After the promo period is another discussion. Other phones around $700-900 so it isn't far fetched for a Smartphone to be in the $599-699 range.

If people keep saying the price is $599.99 because of the $100 off coupon, it's kind of saying that $699.99 is too high in my opinion.

We'll know if the price is too high based upon what HTC does in a few months. If the price stays the same for awhile, then it will mean that sales are good and there is no need to reduce the price. If the price gets permanently reduced rather quickly, then we will know that the device isn't selling, hence the permanent price reduction.

I buy stuff I want. And if its expensive; I save. I just simply don't care what "others" think. Following the crowd just isn't something that appeals to me. I rocked the DNA (early adopter of 5") screens before it was cool. I think HTC has a winner PROVIDED they didn't monkey something up. If BR would offer presales I would have an order on the line. I have had awesome luck with my HTC Droid and my HTC Droid DNA (thats 3+ years old, with wireless charging and NFC and 5"..etc).

To ME (important part to read) S7e only selling point to me is MFS and battery life. The edge part is about useless...er.....Bugt if my DNA dies..I have not choice.

*rolls dice* Come on HTC...show me da MONEY!

Well, market trends have repeatedly shown that very few phones can survive $700 price points on the Android side. With this in mind, yes I think the price is too high.

Start with high price then, reduce it later on, strategy might work.... However, Samsung Note 6 is due out in summer and iPhone 7 in fall.. So they basically have 3-6 months to sell as many phones as they can before the big brands update their line... All this drama over the price and it hasn't even been released yet! Hopefully the reviews will stay positive when it does get to the general public otherwise at that sale price they have no chance of stealing some of Samsung's and Apple's profits...

Yeah...Just like my Evo and LTE 4G and My M8, I'm going to buy one on Sprint with a two year contract and pay $199. All of those phones were introduced at the $650+ price point.....

All the major carriers are selling this phone......

Of the big four US carriers, only Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint will be carrying the HTC 10.

AT&T will not.

Or are you saying AT&T is not a major carrier.

On the day of the HTC 10 launch, I went to the pre-order page and I saw AT&T as an option.

Then, later on, I heard AT&T isn't carrying it. Now, the option seems to be gone on the pre-order site.

That's weird.

That was just HTC putting the AT&T logo there so AT&T customers would know that the HTC 10 would work on AT&T.

That's weird. I thought it was there as a carrier branded version.
