I'm looking for a phone to replace my Nexus 5. Should I get the Moto X or keep my Nexus 5 and buy wifey a Moto G?

I think it is an upgrade. I had the nexus 5 for 10 months or so and got the lg g3 and after got the moto x. I like the feel of it, the bump in screen size, and the battery lasts longer than it did on the nexus. I thought it would be more of a sidegrade but I'm enjoying it so far.

As a current Nexus 5 owner that is waiting for his Moto X to arrive (early next week), I will answer that question thoroughly as I feel A LOT of people -- especially ones that don't want the too large Nexus 6 -- have that question.

I will do my best.

Nice to see you joining the crew! I know you've been on the fence about it for a while, and so I hope it works out well for you. I love my Moto x, but I also came from a much older phone than N5. Keep us posted!

What's your color combo going to be like?

White front. Slate back. Silver trim. I'll post pictures too. :)

My dad upgraded to the Moto X 2014 last week. I've been using the N5 for a year now, so I compared the two side-by-side. No doubt the Moto is a significant upgrade.

The screen on the Moto is far nicer to look side-by-side; definitely looks blue while the nexus is very yellow (as is to be expected with AMOLED vs. LCD), but the image quality is far nicer. The Moto doesn't get quite as bright as the N5, but the extra brightness that the N5 can achieve above and beyond it is far too harsh for me to even look at indoors; to me, therefore, the only benefit of the N5's extra brightness is for use in direct sunlight. The AMOLED on the Moto looks far brighter than my old GS3 (two years of developing that tech have gone a long way), and that thing was useless in sunlight. Haven't used his in the sun, but I'm confident it'll do just fine.

The Moto's speaker is CRAZILY better than the Nexus! The build quality and in-hand feel also blow away the Nexus. It's a lot heavier, and honestly just feels more expensive. That's the most succinct way I can describe it.

Unfortunately my Nexus 5's screen just went out, 8 days out of warranty. I really like my Nexus 5, it's been a great phone, and I'm very glad to have used it over the past year, but using my dad's Moto in person (rather than just a few minutes with the display model) was enough to push me over the edge and order my own Moto X today. :)

I'm confident that any Nexus 5 user would be impressed by the Moto if they used it in real life. Try one out if you can at a carrier store, and see what you think. Can't wait for mine to get here! :D

Had the Nexus 5 as soon as it was released. Got the Moto X (v2) as soon as the Maker site went live. It's an awesome phone! Big upgrade over the Nexus 5.

Dunc

I had the 2014 x and n5 at the same time. I'd say the x was a significant upgrade.

Here's my opinion I just got moto x gen 2 yesterday and I got my wife the lg g3. Appearance moto is better by far, but what got me was battery life. This morning I surfed the web with a fully charged battery 3hrs later I'm down to 17%. They gave this phone a big update in 2.5 snap dragon processor and better mega pixels for sure but y use the same size battery as in the old moto x? I'm huge moto fan but something told me in my gut u have 10 days to be able to switch devices so I switched to the lg g3. Plus I was never a big fan of not being able to replace or take the battery out myself. I do believe that the lgg3 will be the #1 android phone overall this year and it killed me that the moto battery life was going to be this poor. I know all smart phones drain the battery but why make this awesome moto x with this **** battery.

If your talking about a pure edition i'd say i think the 14' moto x is more refined and the motorola features really are nice.

Make sure to drain and charge the battery completely so that you maximiZe the batteries memory otherwise you might end up with shortened battery time.

Congrats man! Which color combo did you go for?

Thank you. :D

Well, I had bought the Moto Maker card, and was preparing to actually design it right after I left that comment, and when I punched the PIN number in it turns out I had... a 1st Gen Moto X card. The dude at the ATT store sold me the wrong one. :( Just went back and got it fixed, and am about to order though Moto Maker now: black leather back, white front, and silver trim. Simple, handsome, and soon-to-be-mine :)

Had a moto x for two weeks and still have a nexus 5 but yes I would say it is an upgrade over the Nexus 5. I wanted 64 GB so returned it. I will eventually try the Nexus 6 but am using a OPO as my daily driver for now, but updated my Nexus 5 to lollipop today so I am messing with it tonight.

I don't think the Moto X has any huge advantages over the Nexus 5, but it does a lot of things slightly better. The build quality is slightly better and obviously offers more customization. The amoled screen is slightly better. The camera is slightly better. And the OS is slightly better since it's basically Lollipop with a few added enhancements. All together, I think it is a justifiable upgrade over the Nexus 5.

I have the N5 and guy at work has a 14 moto x. If they would of put wireless charging in the x it would of been a no brainer for me to upgrade. But now I'm waiting for my N6 to ship.

I moved from a Nexus 5 to a 2014 Moto X and consider it an upgrade. Like a lot of others, I really enjoyed my N5, and the nice thing about the X is that is sort of feels like a new Nexus phone given its nearly stock Android implementation.

I just got my Moto X today, and it is not too early for me to say that the Moto X camera is abysmal. It is bound to be one area that will be worse than the Nexus 5 (honestly, the Nexus 5 camera is quite good).

The MX camera, so far, is hit or miss -- with a lot more misses than hits (the hits aren't anything to write home about either). This is both on normal setting and in HDR mode. And this isn't based off just a few snaps. I really dove into the camera. It's straight up bad.

(Enjoying everything else about the Moto X, though). More to come...
