Is thee any reason why Google Play persistently displays No connection when the device is connected?

any reason why google play persistently displays "No connection" when the device is connected?

Asus Memo pad 8
Android 4.2.2
Tried updating google play to latest version as well as reverting it to factory
Google user account is signed in.
Device is connected to internet - everything else connects and works fine.

Try rebooting the device to see if that helps. It's probably stuck in that error and a reboot of the device should fix it.
