Is there a way to persuade my phone to switch to a stronger wifi signal?

Hanging on to weak WiFi signal

Our bungalow has a WiFi Router and a WiFi Access Point in order to get coverage throughout. They use the same SSID and same encryption/passsword, so switching can happen automatically. There is some signal from both stations in most of the house, and often I find my phone (and Galaxy Tab) struggling with a very weak signal when the nearest station is at 100%, about three metres away.

I can understand trying to hang on to a weakening signal, as continual swapping between stations would be disruptive. But we don't move around all that often, and it would be nice if the switch between stations happened sooner, even if that meant switching more often as well.

Is there a way to persuade the WiFi to switch to a stronger channel sooner?

Try giving this App a try called Best WIFI. Might be what you are looking for to help you switch automatically.

Re: Hanging on to weak WiFi signal

Thanks for the suggestion.

I tried Best WiFi and it was a qualified success. When I moved from the Belkin Access point (802.11g/2.4MHz) to the ASUS RT-AC87U (802.11ac 2.4GHz/5GHz) the switch-over was fast. However, going in the other direction, the signal dropped to strength "3" then stuck there, still connected to the ASUS.
The S4 indicators were inconsistent. In the settings, it showed my network connected, and the signal at full strength, but in the status bar, the WiFi icon showed low signal.
The settings seems to show the strongest signal available, while the status bar at the top of the display shows the current connection. Even though the S4's own scan repeatedly found the very strong Belkin signal (I could reach out and touch the antenna), it didn't want to switch, and neither did Best WiFi, it seems.

Well, I'd have to try SWIFI if only because of the close match with my name!☺

Re: Hanging on to weak WiFi signal

I have a similar setup. My access point has a different name and password and my phone and tablet will automatically switch between them most of the time. I would think both of them having the same name would confuse the phone!

you can do it on your routers. select the minimum data rate you can accept. e.g 54M.

if you move away from the router and the data rate is lower than 54M then it will drop the connection.

hope this helps
