I don't know about tapping but you can wake it up by moving your palm over the screen without touching it. Settings > Accessibility > Dexterity & Interaction > Dexterity > Air Wake Up > On.

Nah, tapping is best. It's 100%.

100% on what? Works flawless on the G2 and G3 but 70 to 80% on my wife's HTC E8.
