Is this phone worth buying in spite of the issues?

I think the phone is worth it. A friend just purchased one two weeks ago and is not having the random robot problems. So hopefully the same will apply to you. To me that is the biggest problem, second is battery life which is annoying but manageable.

The phone is worth it. HTC pulled the update that caused all the issues so if you got the phone you should be fine. Not to mention once the phone is rooted with a custom ROM is even better. I just got the Rom dasBAMF 3.0 on my TB today and I love it.

Yes worth it. I've had mine since launch day. No issues.

There are ways to correct the reboot issue if you have it.

Wow,

First of all I have to say I certainly did not expect to get this many responses so quickly. Thank you all. Today I will be calling customer service and see what my options are regarding early upgrade. I was told I could go in on the 3rd, a week early, as my upgrade is actually on the 10th. Maybe with the weekend and the holiday I might be able to persuade them to upgrade me today or tomorrow.

Again, thanks for your replies, I appreciate them all.

Yep, this phone is great once you root it. Just installed the release candidate for cm7 on it yesterday. All I can say is wow, its a new phone. A phone that reminds me of my beloved droid 1. Cm7 makes the sense based roms battery life a joke.

Lte + screen size makes me love this phone even more.

Hold on....There are more complaints on this forum than praise.

I think that the phone is Good to Very Good depending on your reboot issues. 4G speed is great if you are in a 4G area. If you are not in a 4G area now it probably does not make sense to pick it up because by the time the VZW expands to your area you will probably be looking for a new phone.

HTC has the Incrd2 out now and Moto has alternatives for 3G. Samsung's new 4G device looks nice but not as clean as the TB.

If you want to root and control everything the TB elevates to a great device and worth the purchase as long as you can handle the battery issues.

Just my opinion........

Yes.

First, if you are on Verizon, it is still the best phone in their lineup. Second, the problems are not effecting everyone (very, very few problems here) and they should be getting fixed soon, anyway.

I love the Tbolt except for the reboots and battery life. But the reboots should be fixed "soon" and you can always get the extended battery. And in my opinion, any smartphone will always use more battery than you want it to, so to me that is not a legitimate issue. If you like it, get the Tbolt!

I'm very satisfied up to this point (several weeks) using a stock, non-rooted phone. No reboots as reported by others. Battery life is satisfactory for me and similar to other smart phones, but I am in a non-4G area and my opinion might be different if I was. It is a very nice, responsive phone. Now if we could finally get Gingerbread and Skype, then it would be even better. I would still recommend the phone to others.

Considering replacing mine soon. Its great when it works but its unreliable. So it fails as a business phone.

I'm now thinking the Thunderbolt might be my next phone but if this phone and the LTE network is buggy then is it really worth getting if the fixes are still delayed? I'd be tied to it for another two years. I seriously have until the 7th (tiered data plans) to figure this out. Apparently switching from a BlackBerry unlimited data plan to Android is considered a new plan and not grandfathered in. I'd have to deal with the tiered plans.

So in spite of the problems this phone has is it a good solid phone?

Coming from a BlackBerry Bold 9650, I have had the pleasure of trying out several devices for reasonable periods of time, Droid X, ThunderBolt (1st time), Pre2, and iPhone...anyway, now I'm back on the ThunderBolt.

I have been desperately looking for another device that can keep up with my productivity/multitasking demands, while having some measure of stability. The ThunderBolt has been performing for me admirably this time around. However, webOS is a strong contender for me as well, and I still have the Pre2 if webOS 2.1 ever releases on VZW and I'll probably try the Pre3 when it comes out.

Having said all that, and my apparent ADD with wireless devices aside, I have no problems recommending the ThunderBolt to you. It's well made. If you will use it for business, and have hosted Exchange, make sure you set that up first for your email before you set up the gmail/yahoo/etc. EAS is still a little twitchy in the Android environment, but I've not encountered any issues after I set it up this way. Also limit the calendar history to 90 days or less (YMMV).

Suggestion: get the extended battery. If you're in a 4G footprint, you will need it. The standard battery seems to work well in a 3G environment.

As far as VZWs network is concerned, I have not encountered any glaring glitches when I've been in the 4G footprint. In fact, my only recollection of the experience is "holy **** this thing is stupid-fast!!"

Enjoy it. I would pick one up before the weekend. The other feature I like about the ThunderBolt is the camera, I think the picture quality is ridiculous (very good). I'm impressed.

:p

I say go for it! I was hesitant because of all the issues people were complaining about. I got mine and rooted it the same day and installed MR2. No random reboots for me and battery life is ok. I've had no issues. I love this phone.

I agree. No issues here. Just root and clean some things up bloat wise. Good to go.

Concur. TBolt is great. 4G will suck your battery down, but if you can spare the cash, get the extended battery. If you are on WiFi a lot, then you might not need the battery.
No problems here in the Bay Area with mine, but it did do some quirky stuff when I was on vacation in NY. Kind of tells me that the TBolt issues that people see is Network related. I'm super happy with this phone!
I'm running this thing stock and with the last OTA update on my phone.

I haven't had any problems with mine that couldn't be worked around. I'm very satisfied with it. My husband got one last week and, so far, likes his too.

Ok.

I got yet another Tiered Data explanation. I tried calling 611 last night and got the "Due to the high volume of calls" message. I hung up and drove to the Corporate owned VZW store in my area. After speaking to the rep I was told that VZW changed all their coding for the unlimited plans to the same code. Whether they were BlackBerry plans or not they were now all considered the same. I can wait til the 10th and upgrade then and still keep my unlimited data and not have to switch to tiered pricing.

So, what does this mean? It means I still have to call 611 and verify this. After having two different people tell me two different things I want verification.

Funny thing is that the rep said I could use the early upgrade on my primary line. Yeah, and give up my NE2? No. I can wait a week and save $50. Funny how they keep pushing that.

So... Back on the topic... What's up with the battery heat, life, and delayed updates? Is that the only real gripe with this phone?

How does it compare to it's sister phone, the EVO? I have a co-worker that absolutely loves his EVO and is nearly begging me to get the Tbolt.

I haven't had a single issue other than things I caused myself. So I would say there is no reason NOT to buy this phone if you're interested in it at all.

I think if you call VZW they will do an early upgrade over the phone and still accommodate your discount. I don't understand why they didn't offer that for you in store. Just call and ask.

I don't have any issues with the battery getting very hot. It only heats up when I use the navigation but even then its nothing crazy. The temps stay around 110* F. If it ever goes over 140* F then the phone shuts down.

I don't have issues with updates because I rooted the phone. I installed the MR2 leak the first day I got the phone and this phone works great. I don't have the reboot issue and battery life is ok.

Just keep an open mind. This phone is not perfect but it works like its supposed to for me. Good luck!

Broke this off onto it's own thread but it is a very GOOD thing
