Is this the beginning of the end for Play Music?

Yeah I realize it's nothing new and that's why I hate that. I'm surprise they haven't fully blended Waze into Google maps and killed it off.
haha oh yeah but they are working on the ways integration with Google maps / Android Auto. I'm just trying to mess around with Spotify to see if I fully like it before I invest in so much not financially just for my own damn time lol.

I have a package deal that includes Hulu for a very low price. They run deals from time to time

I got you. The sound quality through spotify's digital equalizer isn't bad so far. I can't wait perfect timing for my Google pics of bud 2's to arrive in the mail tomorrow!

If you currently have Google Play Music, then activate YouTube Music, does Google Play Music stop working?
It didn't for me, but I had Google Play Music long before YouTube Music was in existence. I'm not sure if things have changed since then.

Well I will say this much YouTube music basic versus premium doesn't let you listen to background music Google play music and every other streaming service does. For 10 bucks a month give me a break that's a lot of money.

Are you saying premium doesn't let you stream in the background for $10 a month? Because I'm having no problems.

no no sorry let me be clear If you have YouTube music basic you can't listen to music in the background, while premium lets you do everything..... For $10/month.

Yeah, that's an odd discrepancy, since GPM does allow background streaming even without a subscription.

I think he said basic doesnt stream in the background
Yes, yes, yes thank you both very much for agreeing with me! YouTube music has a great music interface! But it's a very weird and annoying discrepancy that it won't let you listen to music in the background If you're on the basic plan. You have to pay 10 bucks a month just have the ability to listen to music in the background of multitask. Forget the no ads and unlimited music skips...

Gotcha. I was confused by the end of your post that I quoted. I thought you were paying and not able to steam in the background. And if I missed a previous post, I apologise.

My wife and I pay $14.99 a month for a family plan. I moved over to YouTube Music quite some time ago after it was clear Play Music was going away. I guess I'm in the minority, I haven't had any issues.

So.. I use GPM different than many of you it seems. I cache music to my device so I can listen in the car or while out for a walk. I do this because of my metered data plan so streaming is out of the question. If I download/cache music for offline play in the background, can I do it with the basic plan or will I need to pay to even do that. I'm talking about caching music I own, that I uploaded to GPM initially.

For someone that uses music for, you know MUSIC!, this change is disturbing. I mean, I put on music, start workout tracking on Google Fit then turn off the screen and put my phone in my pocket. If I can't do that on the basic plan I'll need to find an alternate solution for my music needs and will "lose" some albums I've acquired through GPM.

Paid as in have access to or paid as in you also purchased them?

Ones that I purchased on GPM. To be honest though, most or all of those were "bought" when they were made available for free during a promotion. They're not ones I have physical media for, it was all digital.

I've noticed that Google has been improving YTM's interface significantly over the past year, so I would expect them to continue tweaking it based on feedback. So everyone, keep sending feedback!

What the need to improve on is YTM's recommendation algorithm. Having been using it for the last year or so, I appreciate the Discover playlist, and other suggestions, but I feel like the algorithm is too short-sighted and makes suggestions based only on what I've been listening to LATELY.
Hopefully with my GPM history imported, this will improve, but if not, that's what they need to improve next.

Yeah, I'm sorry. I tried to clarify the best I could. Well, that's great that you and your wife pay 15 bucks a month for the family plan. For me, paying 10 bucks a month just for a premium access to streaming music services which would allow me to listen to music in the background multitasking wise is too expensive for me. Lol. I'm playing with Spotify now to see if I truly truly love it. Although I would love to use Google software but right now I'm not able to.

I mean other than having music locally on my phone which I don't, I use Google play music for streaming for years. It was also great! I have heard that Google was planning to shut down the play music service/servers. I just didn't think we would come this year. Because they've been talking about it for years and years honestly. It is a legacy service after all. The application wasn't very smooth on the Android and it had a few issues with playback and the audio freezing up. But I still loved using nonetheless though.

The part I'm still not grasping - if I have music uploaded to my library, just as I've done with GPM, and then cache that same music to my phone I still can't listen to that music in the background unless I pay for a subscription?

See that's a good question I'm not sure. Maybe someone else can chime in about this...
