Is waterproofing really that important to you?

Because I pay for insurance, it is not a deal-breaker, but... I live/work in a humid environment, on a river. (fishing resort / constantly on the dock / outside in the rain, etc.) So, yeah... it's actually does matter to me.

Waterproofing isn't necessary. Most phones don't have it and will survive submerged in water for several minutes anyway.

My experience living on a river for the last 15 years working at a resort where LOTS of phones are dropped in the water does not agree with your statement that most phones can be submerged for several minutes and survive... If they will even turn on, there will be display issues or other glitchiness. They're usually toast.

We all want waterproof phones, and some folks are balking at the Pixel due to its lack of water-resistance, but is that feature really that important to you?

If you have a waterproof phone, how many times have you gotten it wet? I get that it's nice to have in case of emergency, but I've had my own phones for 10 years now and have literally never gotten any of them damagingly wet.

Thoughts?

I can tell you that I have ruined a number of phones that were NOT waterproof... (live on a river, work on a dock)

I ordered one anyway, I buy insurance, but I gotta say that Google should have, IMO, come out of the gate with IPx8.... jus' sayin'...

Of course it's important. It's like fire insurance on a house. You may never use it, but you'll be glad you have it if your house burns down. You can be careful with your phone, but accidents are called accidents for a reason.

I'm not purchasing a Pixel because it lacks water resistance.

If I had a real choice of something else to replace the GN7, I would have skipped the Pixel XL based on being waterproof. I was really looking at the LG v20, but I've had LG phones in the past, and it has never been a really good experience.

Also, I *suspect* the Pixel, because of the Google Branding, will likely hold its resale value a bit better. (that comment based on an Android Central article showing how the LG g5 was the quickest to lose resale value compared to some other top-end phones).

I also think that since I'm going to sell the Pixel XL as soon as I can get a Deton8, I believe it will appeal to a potentially broader buyer base. Of course, I'm guessing. just my gut. Waterproofing IS a big deal to me.

When I first got my S7E I ran a 5k and it was pouring the entire time. I was very happy to be waterproof then. Beyond that it's just a nice back up.

Honestly it's of very little importance to me. I don't trust it enough, and I sure as hell wouldn't discount the pixel because of it.

I have never had a waterproof phone and the only one I ever lost was the original Droid Razr to the toilet bowl gods... It would be nice to have but is not the focus for me buying a phone... my wife has an S7 and wanted to watch a video while in the shower and I told her to go right ahead... I'll admit, it would be nice to do something like that...

While I've never dunked a phone or had a direct hit from a beverage, I am still a little concerned.

I frequently exercise with my phone either on an arm holster or tucked into the back of my cycling jersey. It gets exposed to moisture from sweat and there is a chance of being rained on. With my S5 I never really worried about that, but I will be with this device. I had friends with Apply devices whose moisture sensors were set off by sweat at the gym and denied warranty claims.

Does it not rain in Mountain View, California? If so, that may explain why Google's engineers didn't obther waterproofing the Pixel phone. If they live on the east coast or Florida, I'm sure they would have insisted on waterproofing. My town got about 157 days during the last 12 months, according to Wikipedia. Not being able to use the phone in light rain(even under umbrella) is just a very risky proposition.

Not at all.... The few times I've tried to use waterproofed phones while they're wet have been frustrating because touch response is horrible..I end up just sticking them back in my pocket and waiting until I'm out of the rain anyways. Nice to have for peace of mind? Yeah, but far far from essential for me.

Yeah, took my S7E to a waterpark to test out the waterproof feature and while it worked, the water kept triggering the touch screen during photos and videos.

I saw that video. I still wouldn't take it to a pool or waterpark, but gives a nice peace of mind.

I don't take my phone swimming, or take a bath with it, or pour champagne all over it so..... no.

Last times where I did get one of my phones wet - I put it in a cup of rice and let it dry for a day... phone still runs to this day... no issues...

Not sure why this is such a big deal... other than the fact other phones have it.. so it's now considered a negative...

How long will it be before we start docking phones negatively in reviews because it still has a headphone jack?

A year ago it wouldn't have even been a thing.

Not a deal breaker but the other phones in this price tier have it. Would've been nice.

Not really near any water most of the time so I don't need it at all. It's a nice thing to have during the summer though if you're going to the beach regularly, though.
