Issue on Jelly Bean - Visual Text Notification

I recently just upgraded my phone from the DROID Bionic to the DROID Razr Maxx HD. I'm still getting used to the Jelly Bean update as my Bionic had updated itself to it. Since the update and on my new phone I've realized that once I receive a new text message and click on the icon, the visual notification the in the status bar goes away even though I have not read the message. I like to keep the notifications up there as a reminder that I need to respond to unread ones. Is there anyway to make it go back to the old way?

What icon are you referring to? When I have a text message I can see part of it in the notification area. It doesn't go away unless I dismiss the notifications.
