I am setting an Honor 5x for a relative. I am basically setting up the programs they use on their phone to the Honor 5x. I am encountering an issue with yahoo weather widget. The widget displays the current time and weather. I have notice that time clock on the widget fails to update. To update it, I have to click on the widget to display the yahoo weather application. the time would update but then failed to update again until I click on the widget again.

I tried the widget on another android phone and it works perfectly. I experimented with the battery settings in the application settings.

* I added the application tot he protected apps, thinking that perhaps EMUI was killing the yahoo weather process. However, this did not resolve the issue.
I toggled the power-intensive prompt, I believe this prevents the OS from prompting you to close application when it draws too much power. This did not resolve the issue.
* I toggled the "keep running after screen off" and it appears to resolve the issue.

Now when I look at the power usage firewall, it said that Weather app is keeping awake. Is this going to cause problem with battery life?

However, when I look at

It depends on how often the Yahoo Weather app is waking the phone to refresh data. Can you find a setting in the app to modify how frequently it updates?

I think the default interval is 2 hours. However, I think the main issue is waking the phone does not refresh the data for some reason. For example, if I unlock my Lg phone, the widget updates and time gets incremented to current time, which is the proper thing to do. When I tried this on the Honor 5x, the widget does not update when I unlock the phone, so when the screen goes from blank to the home page, it doesn't display the correct time. It displays the same time as when I locked the phone (which may be off, too).

Hmm, it may be something deeper in the system that's still preventing the widget from updating properly, even though it's a "protected" app. Huawei tends to go overboard with this task-killing business.

Is Restrict Background Data turned on?

No, restricted background data is not turned on.

I did some digging and I think I figured out the issue. EMUI appears to be fairly aggressive in killing background processes. I compare the running process of my LG vs the Honor. Both have yahoo weather on their home page. Both are using the Nova launcher.

What I have notice is that the yahoo weather process sticks around on the LG, even after I have locked the phone. On the Honor 5x, I notice that the yahoo weather process disappears immediately after I locked the phone unless I check "keep running after screen off". The weather app does draw some power, but it's tiny compare Facebook and Whatsapp's power draw. I am not sure why the other widget works but not yahoo.

In any case, if any of your widget failed to update upon phone unlocked. Check checking "keep running after screen off" and see if it resolves your issue.
