Soooo... unrooted S3 here. Verizon.

I had the Nova launcher over the Apex for a few reasons. Loved it. Then it started asking me what action I wanted after i pressed the home button to exit an app. I always chose Nova, and every time. But it would forget. Not every time ... but often enough to know there was a problem somewhere. I posted to another forum and they said to install an app called Device Manager. I checked that I wanted Nova for everything. It worked for a while. Then started forgetting everything again.

I got fed up with it and installed Apex. Worked great! For a couple months. Then the same issue. Forgetting actions. I thought I could purchase the full version and maybe it would go away. Nope. Now EVERY TIME I hit the home button .. no matter what app I am in .. it asks me. I am so past frustrated now that I just hit the right soft back button to exit apps now.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, I just cleared app permissons and deleted all data.. then started over. Seems to be working. I hope this doesnt happen again. For the 4th time.

Factory Reset is your friend! :)
Wipe the system cache in Recovery mode
Reload the stock firmware using Kies or Odin

These are all easy things to do once you have a good backup strategy in place. If you don't have a backup plan then you're just a target for a lost/stolen/damaged/corrupted phone, and if it hasn't happened yet then it will.

Kies actually provides decent backup capabilities; couple it with:
Cloud Drive: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.amazon.clouddrive.photos - automatically backup your pictures/videos to the cloud; 5GB free

Drive Photo Uploader: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.mynextandroid.drivephotosync - automatically backup to Google Drive

Dropsync: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.ttxapps.dropsync - sync to Dropbox

Helium: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup - backup your app data

Depending on which cloud-based service you prefer (I listed a couple above) there's probably an app that will allow you to keep your pictures/videos safe.
If you use a 3rd party Launcher you can save your Home screen layout.
Google has your contacts secure.

Go for it!
