I live in SouthWest Louisiana and have had AT&T for about 3 years now. Before that we were with Sprint. We switched merely because of a greater choice of phones at AT&T than Sprint had (at that time)
First two years with AT&T were great, this past year though it has really gotten much much worse.
4 members on our plan, all of us have different phones. We all experience the same problems so I know it isn't phone specific problems. Cell phone reception is great, but connectivity is pretty bad. I get multiple dropped calls on a weekly basis. Same goes for the wife. Kids not so much, but they don't really talk alot either; mostly texting.
Data coverage is a joke. There are two main interstates that run through my state. I-10 and I-49.
I travel the state on a daily basis as a probation/parole officer. I witness huge chunks of MAJOR INTERSTATE with NO DATA COVERAGE. IMO, that is unacceptable.
For about 90 miles in between Lake Charles and Alexandria on Hwy 165, there is NO 3G. In the town of DeRidder and Fort Polk which has 10's of 1000's of residents....no data coverage.
My mothers house who lives just outside of Baton Rouge, no data coverage and BARELY any reception.
Inside my wife and I's office building which is located in a town of 80 thousand+ residents, we have to go outside to accept a call clearly. Forget about data. Thank God for WiFi.
We have spoke many times with AT&T and regularly call and report problems so that they have it on record for our account. AT&T reps tell us that a tower has been down since FEB (which I find hard to believe). They have also told us that they are doing upgrades to handle the load of all the iPhone users. We shall see on that....
They have pretty generous on giving us free upgrades and discounts/credits on our monthly bill, which has kept us hanging around. Not sure how much longer though we will keep persevering.
