I dont think an update is coming our way. Between the Nexus, EVO 3D and hell the EVO 4G, the shift is the least of Sprint and HTC's worries. I'm not being pessimistic, just realistic, but i may be wrong. Any thoughts?

My thought is, just root and don't worry about updates from the carrier/manufacturer

i dont wanna ruin my warranty. Im not too savvy with rooting and dont wanna risk bricking my phone or anything. If you can point me to a guide thats useful i'd be most appreciative. Will it also void my sprint protection plan?

Unfortunately, the Shift seems to be HTC's red-headed stepchild. But that still doesn't preclude the fact that it's a great device. So let's don't forget that, amidst all the hype for newer devices, it's still a winner. Whenever it's replaced/upgraded, the next generation will be awesome (we can only hope). Some things we'd like to see: 4" screen, front-facing camera, 1GB memory, 1.5 GHz processor, dual core, ICS, etc. Until then, we can continue to wish and enjoy what we have.

Im not questioning the devices capabilities. I'm more than satisfied with the phone. Its just this memory leak that's not being addressed by HTC. I'll probably work on rooting mine today, just dont screw myself out of a phone.

If your running 2.3 use this method to downgrade your hboot http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255474 once you downgrade you can use the old froyo root method that's a sticky in the root section.

Forgotten -perhaps. But coming from a Pre - now talk about abandoned!!

The Evo Shift is exactly what I wanted in a phone. Form factor, keyboard, Android. It is a really good device!

This really IS a good device. Sometimes we simply get caught up in all the latest improvements in technology that is the Android world. Innovation. Some of us have had hardware problems. It can, and will, happen. It's mechanical...period. S**t happens to mechanicals. That's where warranties come in, and not just with phones. If you drive you car without some type of warranty, you're either rich or an idiot! If your Shift has a problem, take it back and get it replaced. We Shift owners are just like other device owners; we want the latest technology on our devices. What HTC doesn't seem to realize is that, like other model owners, we want to at least be told that upgrades are coming SOON. Silence is not golden when it comes to your customers' interests in your products. At least give us a "we hear you and it's in the works." Let us at least know that you're listening to us. Send us a survey or something: "What do you want in your next EVO Shift 4G?" That serves two purposes: 1) That you're not going to just dump it. 2) That you really care about what your customers want. How do you keep customers coming back? Great Customer Service. Don't give it, you lose your customers. Are you listening HTC? Probably not, if you go by we Shift owners.

Happy to say after many hours of doing computer work far beyond my knowledge, and help from everyone at Android Central, and XDA-developer forums, I am now running Cyanogenmod 7 nightly on my Rooted Shift.

To anyone who is considering rooting: Do it! Its worth it. As long as you won't miss your warranty. But this is the first Rom I flashed and I don't miss Sense once bit (even without the crashing) I'm deff now a vanilla android believer.

Thanks again to everyone on AC and XDA!

You should check out some of the mik roms with sense. And a port 3.0 only is in the works too.

Ehh any other benefits to mik besides a more stable sense? Like I said I'm becoming a bigger fan of vanilla 2.3 than I was of sense
