I've disconnected the synced account (email) but the contacts are still in my phone

Hi,
I've removed my email account from my HTC M8 but the contacts that came with it when I originally synced it, are still in the 'peoples' folder. Even though I have gone through an manually deleted these after removing the account, then restarted the phone 3 times, they are still appearing.
I don't know where they are coming from, given the account has been removed.
Please help.

Your contacts will have been backed up in your Google Account so you will need to access your account online and delete from there to prevent them being restored

Did you just delete the email account or delete the account itself by doing:
Settings > Accounts > Google > Select account > Menu > Remove account

The resync your contacts and the contacts from the deleted account should be gone.

1. The email account and the Google account, even if they're the same email address, are separate accounts.

2. Deleting the Google account won't delete your contacts. Sync with a Google account that has no contacts, make it a one-way sync, Google contacts to phone only (not phone to server), and your contacts will all be marked deleted. (That doesn't mean that they can't be recovered, it just means that you won't see them in the Contacts app.)
