I've got the new Moto X, you've got questions. Fire away!!!

I did indeed not get a notification.

You are right, as of now, Motorola are not developing their own special hardware doing things like the always listening features.
Yet, they are the only ones (I think) who are implementing this feature. It still stands out, just like their awesome active display.
Another thing they are doing is offering a very much vanilla Android user experience and that is something I particularly like them for. It's just something you're not really often seeing in triple-A flagship phones (not speaking of Google Play Editions, though).
I just like the way they implement their software features (which partially depend on hardware features) and that is what really differentiates them. They may not have developed really new features for the new Moto X, but still the features they adapted from the OG MX are outstanding. So IMHO there is no need to change these. Why bloat the awesomely clean user experience?

I agree. While some features are not entirely original, it seems that Motorola is LISTENING to what users want and incorporating those features into their phones. Some features on some phones are gimmicky. In contrast, I find the features that Moto is pursuing eminently USEFUL.

The vanilla Android experience and using Google Play apps to help customize the Motorola phones allows the Moto devs to QUICKLY update the features on our devices.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my original Moto X, but I have to say that I really like where Motorola seems to be heading with the customer requested features, the customization options, and the well-thought-out (and aesthetically beautiful) accessories. That said, I'm definitely "in" for the new Moto X.

Motorola has less work to do, that's all i needed to read. It makes the device cheaper. It leaves me curious about the performance. Are the IR sensors more reliable? Is the 801 dsp better than their custom hardware? Are either of these more power efficient? While i may never get the answer, i'm very curious.

He has been using it pretty steadily as he explores its capabilities and functions....pretty awesome!

Sounds fine to me. I'm not exactly an audiophile though. Not sure I've ever had a phone that sounded bad through headphones. Interesting question, actually. Any phone you can think of that's an outlier there?

From my own experience, I know that the Nexus phones tend to have a lower sound output (volume) through the jack compared to most of the flagship devices (especially the One & the iPhone). But I have also read that the sound output degrades on the OnePlus One when headphones are used. The Xperia Z1 & Z2 also aren't as impressive as you might think considering Sony's history.

Excerpt from Punit Soni's Google+ page:

+Punit Soni Why the move away from the X8 system? I understand the SD801 has similar capability, but is it as power efficient as the dedicated low power cores in the X8?

+Punit Soni congratulations for the next gen launches. Eagerly waiting on what all software updates that we, gen 1 moto x owners get :-)

+nikhil y. almost all of it.
+Aaron Cooper yes
+Robert Romano I think you will be pleased with the battery life. +Kirk Stromberg
+Sudhir Parasuram Lakkaraju yes Flipkart is our exclusive partner
+Martino Salazar it will get all the features the HW can support.
+Sivasamraj Manoharan I don't know how to whisper :)
+Aladdin Tarshan it means that if there is feature which is dependent on a particular hardware component then it can only run on a phone which has that. Our intention to support all phones equally as far as possible.
+Luke Angus I don't use skip. I use trusted devices feature on my phone.

In answer to your earlier question. I replied the below to another commenter.

FROM PHANDROID (apologies to AC for quoting a competitor, I just happened to remember their post):

"One of the must-have features in last year’s Motorola Moto X was its always-listening Google Search functionality. Motorola had to put precious R&D into developing their own custom X8 chip with a low-power always listening core. With the Snapdragon 801, Motorola has a little less work to do. This functionality is already built in."

If this is the case, that the 801 processor has the always listening core, then it shouldn't be that difficult for the other phone manufacturers, or a few enterprising developers to port the feature over to the 2014 flagships. No real differentiating factor then, if it ever happens.

I am waiting to see what vzw offers in the DROID line. Qi Wireless charging is a must. I don't mind the bigger phone. Any word on the DROID line?

They are still using the two extra cores like last year ..think they confirmed it in the hangout session.. They are not touting it like they did last year .. Probably because lot of people questioned them for using flimsy ways of counting cores and calling it octocore ..

I think someone did a proof of concept on the Nexus 5. They didn't release it. I think they were afraid of getting sued by Qualcomm.

I have a weird feeling that the droid line will be discontinued. Motorola has been trying to streamline their company as much as possible, and I don't think producing 3 Verizon exclusive phones that don't sell very well to begin with is good for business. I would imagine Motorola will just sell the Moto X, G, and E on Verizon.

Phil, Do the features moto seem to be working on the new moto X? I can use old one for a while and them for whatever reason it will not only read texts while driving but also while I'm standing in line in the cafeteria. Or if I'm listening to BT music it reads notifications in some crazy fast voice. I always have to turn most of this stuff off after a few days. Any hiccups so far?

I think it looks better than last year — not having plastic **** up against plastic is a big part of that. I think the leather is definitely going to show signs of aging sooner than the other finishes, though. That'll be interesting to watch.

That is what makes leather cool though, you know like feeling a leather ball glove get broken in or a leather couch get subtle wear marks on them. It's just going to add character. My 2c

I have the first generation, if the Moto X, and seem quite Happy with it.

How is the new Moto X different?

So, because Motorola used the capabilities already present on the 801 and didn't add unnecessary extras just so you could have the X8 title, it makes the device cheaper? I'm curious to know your reasoning by that. Would you have preferred they call it X8 and add an extra $50 to the price?

Now you are thinking more like Samsung and Apple marketing. Charge an inflated price to raise the perceived value of product.

Yes, I think I do recall reading about that somewhere. That was then... it might be different now. :p

I'm on a plane today headed for Las Vegas, with the new Moto X safely in my pocket. I've been using it all weekend, and will continue to use it this week. If you've got questions, I've got some answers. Ask away!

(And do note that if I don't respond immediately, it's because I'm indeed traveling.)

Have at it!
