I've had my laptop connected to my LCD TV for about 4 years now.

I've got a wireless keyboard and mouse and have used it from my couch/coffee table to watch youtube and all the other streaming sites.

I also use it to surf the web, do email and everything else.

So why do I need Google TV?

Google TV is useful for someone who doesn't want to switch their input when they move between tv and web. Someone that wants to be able to see the game while they look up a stat. Someone that doesn't want to connect and disconnect their laptop every time they want to use it. It's not for everyone, and it's still in it's primitive stages, but down the road, once apps become available and new hardware options, I suspect it will distinguish it's usefulness even more.

Or people that want to search live tv broadcasts, unify their interface and allow more the one person web connectivity on the tv without giving up their laptop.

Your flaming dude. Get a life.

It's not for everyone, but I've elected to take my computer out of the living room and replace it with GTV to clean things up a bit.

Things I don't miss:

Keyboard and Mouse laying around
Loud computer
18 remotes
Switching inputs
Trying to explain to the GF how to switch

Things I miss:

Boxee :-(
Full on Browser support

Oh chill out. I was asking a question. I can't see the advantages.

I keep the laptop connected permanently as we have other computers. Switching takes 2 seconds on the remote.

Keyboard goes in a drawer on the coffee table.

Plus, I can watch picture in a picture so I can keep a TV game on screen while I surf the net and look up stats, chat on a message board about the game, etc.

I think Google TV would be a step down from all that, but am trying to make sure I'm correct.

sounds like you have it figured out. maybe once some apps get released the platform will be more enticing to you.

Hmm these are good points. Of course I'm waiting for it develop more but I think Google will Come up with something brilliant for their gtv.
I was also thinking about hooking up a Mac mini to my TV and use my laptop wherever I need it such as school or whatever.

Maybe if Google's price drops then ill lean more towards gtv but for the most part I'm leaning toward the op

It's like the iPad; not as capable as a full-on computer, but much more practical and convenient for media consumption.

I just purchased a Sony 32" GTV. I like it so far. I personally wanted one because:
a) I wanted a new TV.
b) I don't want to purchase a computer/laptop set-up to hook up to a TV when I can do it with the GTV.

If you are satisfied with your laptop set-up, I don't see a point to getting the GTV. But it is nice to be able to access media on my main computer via wifi and not transfer stuff onto an external HD or something like that. I guess you could also set that up on your laptop as well. I also like the current applications on the GTV and I can't wait for the full market to come in 2011!

GTV vs a computer is like the difference between running a linux box as a home router or getting a DLink 'appliance' router.
