The Jelly Bean (JRO03O) update that popped up on a Verizon Galaxy Nexus last night is now available for download. If you want to flash it though, there are a couple of things you should know. First, you need to make sure your stock G-Nex is running IMM76Q. Second, this is a test build and apparently not the official build that users will see. So if neither of those things bother you, then you should jump all over this.

It’s being reported that this JB build contains both a new bootloader and, wait for it, new radios (FF02 CDMA/FG02 LTE). That may make it worth it, right there.

Instructions:

The easiest way to do this, is to get yourself back to stock IMM76K. That may mean that you will need to flash factory images and wipe everything. From there, install ClockworkMod Recovery, download the IMM76Q file and flash it using “install zip from sd card.” After that, download the new Jelly Bean (JRO03O) file to your phone and flash it in CWM Recovery just like you did with IMM76Q. (This is a fantastic resource.)

Also, you could wait until someone turns this into a flashable .zip for any ROM.

FWIW, a flashable radio zip can be found on the last page of our radios thread.

I put the su zip and instructions in the guide.

If your rooted you can just flash the boot loader and radios over any ROM you are using yes even ice cream sandwich. Get them at xda forums.

We have threads for them as well :)

And I believe you can find the JB bootloader in the Jellybean Now sticky in the Rooting section.

You need to be either rooted or unlocked. Rooted: allows you to install custom recovery. Unlocked: allows you to boot into custom recovery, or install custom recovery. You also need to be on stock IMM76Q to flash this.

Well.. you need to be unlocked to flash or boot into a custom recovery. Rooting isn't necessary at all, to be clear. :)

This. Rooting is entirely unnecessary for flashing recovery.

Right, that's what I said.

Option 1) Rooted but not unlocked: Needed to flash Custom Recovery to install this

Option 2) Flash or Boot into custom recovery.

Edit: I am both people. For some reason I'm my name on the mobile app, and rufflez on the PC. Same account.

Rooting should have no affect upon the recovery. What do you mean by number 1? Is it the temp unlock exploit? Because unless I've missed something (and I always do lol), the only thing that matters is the bootloader. Thus, if you're able to root with that exploit then in reality you're simply using that exploit for the recover to flash that and rooting is merely superfluous.

Regardless, those exploits are something I have no experience in and can, in some regards, confuse and muddy the process.

My apologies, just want a clarification, that's all :).

Number 1 means you never unlocked your bootloader. You can root the phone with an exploit (I've never done it, but I thought I read months ago that one was found). From there, you can flash cwm/twrp recovery. If you're not rooted, you can't do this without unlocking the bootloader, which erases the device. You can backup the device in many different venues without rooting, so yes, its superfluous and unnecessary, if that is all you wanted to do. But rooting and flashing a custom recovery would then allow you to update to jellybean though this tutorial without ever unlocking the bootloader and preserving all data. The end result will still be unrooted jellybean.
