JB Update for Verizon Galaxy Nexus Available

Number 1 means you never unlocked your bootloader. You can root the phone with an exploit (I've never done it, but I thought I read months ago that one was found). From there, you can flash cwm/twrp recovery. If you're not rooted, you can't do this without unlocking the bootloader, which erases the device. You can backup the device in many different venues without rooting, so yes, its superfluous and unnecessary, if that is all you wanted to do. But rooting and flashing a custom recovery would then allow you to update to jellybean though this tutorial without ever unlocking the bootloader and preserving all data. The end result will still be unrooted jellybean.

Gotcha, thanks. :)

Yawn.. let me know when I can download without doing all that other stuff. Rooting is a pain.. flashing is a pain.
