Jumped off unlimited bandwagon, saved at least $10 bucks per month, but hard to give up unlimited

for me in a small town doesnt have wifi all of the place, heck why would I try to use someones wifi when I have 4g with great speeds? Its unlimited ,why not use it.

Do you carry an extended battery and/or spares?

For the first time, I turned off Wi-Fi for a day just to see what the experience is like. Man oh man ... 4G certainly kills batteries. I didn't realize how much battery Wi-Fi preserves.

Verizon CFO says "Unlimited" is just a word.

 This should turn this thread into a blazing flame. Just quoting folks.

What I don't understand, is if there are so many people (like me) who don't really need unlimited data, why would Verizon change its plans because people like me are switching to the shared plans and saving money. Almost everyone I know with Verizon has switched to the shared plan and is saving money. So, how could this be a good business decision for Verizon.

I'm always amazed when people say they're using 10GB, 20GB, 30GB (as in this thread) or more of Verizon's 4G. I never go over 2GB. These folks must never enable the Wi-Fi feature on their phones.

I never have and hopefully never will. I pay for unlimited data service....Service without limit. I'm already paying for data at home, as well as my mobile data. So I use each accordingly. I also don't use my phone much at home. So streaming, downloading a new ROM etc adds up. I usually do 4-10GB a week depending on need.

Unlimited is just a word...It means without limit. Maybe their CFO needs to go back to school. Or someone can show him the true meaning of the word by giving him an "Unlimited" beating

That was nice of you to be the good son in law! That being said, there are users who will not benefit from Verizon's new plans.

All of us single line users that use more than 2GB/mo do not benefit.

And as time goes by, app's get bigger and more streaming services get introduced and used.

This being the case, Verizon is smart to get the multi-phone families off the unlimited and on to shared.

My feeling is that in 24 months time, those who made the switch will be wishing they didn't.

Of course, those who did maybe saving a bit of money to up there data plan later.

If I no longer had places offering Wi-Fi, then yes, I would wish I hadn't switched. But bottom line is when a Verizon customer upgrades to a subsidized phone, he or she will have no choice but to switch to a shared plan. So things are changing regardless of the choice to either go shared and get a discounted phone, buy the phone for $300 more and keep unlimited data or switch carriers and not be on as strong of a network. With that, I might as well start saving some money while I can.

The internet use to be a "non-commercial" experiment. When it comes to money, follow the money and that will point you to what the future will bring. As for mobile data, we are all going to pay one way or another. The competitors may offer unlimited for now, but that will change. Especially if Big Red makes money with shared data. The others will follow suit. They may tempt you away now, but once their networks match Big Red, they will pull back on unlimited.

"I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to save money and would move off of the unlimited plan if it didn't cause my plan to go up...

I was a good son in law and took over my Mother in laws phone and Grandmother - in law's phone to save them about 70 a month plus tax. So currently I have 5 lines. 2 Smart phones with unlimited on each and 3 dumb phones. I have 1400 mins allowed and unlimited Text and Data. I only 10 days into the next bill and I have only used 165 min. Most of the time everyone we know is on Verizon. so it's very common for me to only use 6-700 mins or less. I currently pay 229 AFTER taxes for 5 phones and 205.29 before taxes.

With the new plan (using about 2-4 gig a month of data on 2 phones) they suggest the following We Recommend 4 GB Shared Data Unlimited Talk & Text Monthly Access* $240 *Does not include taxes and surcharges Now this does not include my 17% discount that the one above does include but that only applies to the primary account.

So all in all 205.29 (17% discount) vs 240 (no discount)"

The shared plans do use your same discount. So you would take the 17% off of the monthly fee before the line access fee. I think the 4gb starts at 70 so it would be 17% off that making it about 228 which is still more than you pay no but I thought I would let you know they do accept the discount. I personally use my phone too much to lose unlimited and and if I choose the 4gb plan my bill would go up over 30 dollars a month for nothing changing. I also have one of the Verizon "phantom mobile to mobile unlimited plans" so I can call any carrier for free minutes so unlimited minutes means absolutely nothing to me.

I work in a office, so it charges all day. yes 4g is a drain hog :) But I love it.

Re: Jumped off unlimited bandwagon, saved at least $10 bucks per month

If you think 4G on a regular device is a battery hog try it on the RAZR! I get about 8 hours of usage out of my phone before it's at 10% and im looking for a charger! But for me the speeds are worth it! I can get 20mb/s using FoxFi while my home Internet Only delivers 1mb/s!

I would never give up unlimited because now it may not seem like a big deal because 2GB is considered a lot for most users but as the Internet and technology advances 2GB will seem like 2mb. Just look at the play store, most apps used to be around 5-10mb per app now they're anywhere from 20-500mb depending on the game and quality of graphics. What happens when 1Gb apps become the norm and downloading that one game costs $10 if your not on WiFi!
