Just a few questions...

Ok, so I've searched through the forums and not been able to find an answer to any of my questions. If, however, the answer is out there, I apologize for asking again, and please feel free to direct me to where the answer is.

1. Are the rooting/unlocking methods the same for the GSM/CDMA models? Do we use the same files as well?

2. I have rooted both my OG Droid and my Toshiba Thrive, but don't believe I had to unlock the bootloader. Is unlocking the bootloader necessary for rooting the GNex, and if not, what are the benefits of doing so?

3. If there is only one partition on the GNex, does that mean every wipe will erase any CWM backups?

4. I haven't seen a step-by-step rooting guide in this forum, am I just missing it or does someone know where I could find one?

Thanks for any help in answering these questions.

Over on modaco and xda Ive seen the one step root called "superboot" also if I remember right they have the step by step process using adb to achieve root, I know for sure the adb step by step is on "free your android .com". Google it itll come up. And I dont remember if theyre the same files as the gsm model but the threads over there will give you all the info you need.

Dont know anything about the bootloader or the wipe. The nexus is gonna be my first android phone, and Ive only messed around a little w my wifes optimus and you didnt need to unlock the bootloader to root that 1.

I'll try to answer these from what I've read but since most of us don't have the Verizon model yet I could be wrong.

1) The method to unlock should be the same across all Nexus devices. fastboot oem unlock. The method to root should be the same for the LTE model as the GSM one BUT make sure that whatever thread you are working from specifically says it works with the LTE version. I believe the superboot method over on XDA applies to both models.

2) I'm pretty sure you need to unlock the boot loader to root. The benefit to unlocking the bootloader is that it gives you lower level access to the phone so that things like the boot img and kernels can be replaced. I think the only phone i've used that didn't have an unlocked bootloader but was rooted was the Droid X because it was locked down and an exploit had to be used to get around that to achieve root.

3) I don't think wiping will kill your backups at least it shouldn't. I'm sure if that was an issue it could be fixed in whatever version of CWM is put out for the device. I do know that locking and unlocking the bootloader WILL wipe everything so make sure you do that shortly after you get the phone even if you don't plan on rooting it just yet.

4) already answered but here's the link again [MOD] 30 Nov r3: Superboot - rooting the GSM + LTE Galaxy Nexus - xda-developers

hope that helps!

@digitalslacker
This helps tremendously, thanks!

That xda link looked very easy to do.
I believe we should also have prerooted roms and kernels REAL soon after release.
It's getting kinda old seeing all the "release dates" and high tensions/personal attacks in the main forum.
This is the stuff I want to talk about....HACKING THIS PHONE!

:D:D

I believe there are already a few devs working on roms....so yeah I agree we'll see stuff begin to get released very quickly after it's finally out.

yup! hacking the phone is the reason I go Nexus...at the end of the day all the discussion about how VZW is bloating it up and it doesn't have wallet etc isn't really relevant...mine will not have VZBackup or My VZW and it will have wallet...so i could care less :)

THANK YOU! I was starting to think that I was the only one who saw things this way :D

I mean on principle I understand the concern but i'm not gonna get worked up about something that's not gonna matter when I throw a custom ROM on there. :D so long and vzw still let's me do that I don't care...

Oh, one more question...

5. Is there an LTE version of CWM out there? All I am finding is one for the GSM version.

Thanks again for any help!

I haven't seen one either, but if there IS one out I would imagine it's Koush's and it's probably in ROM Manager.

With the release possibly happening tomorrow I would imagine we'll see an official LTE version pretty quickly. I'm not sure why the GSM one wouldn't work, but with out a recovery image to fall back on, i'm not going to suggest trying it.

I read a thread on rootzwiki about a guy who had success using the GSM version, but when he recommended it to another member, they got it to do a backup successfully, but were unable to restore from that backup.. Definitely worth waiting on a confirmed LTE-friendly version!

Rest assured guys, there will be some really talented devs working on this phone. I'm pretty sure imnuts and Adrynalyne are getting one. I also heard jt1134 is interested. These guys are legends.
Imnuts has brought cwm to the charge on his own not to mention a great rom and has made the charge shine.

It's just waiting a few days for some goodies to come out.

I heard Peter Alfonso is getting one and I believe he's been working on a rom via the sdk already so, yeah I think you're right, this phone is going to be VERY supported.
