Yes, some people install rubber tiling, or a similar surface, on their garage floors.

I would hope we can drop any phone from your pants to the floor, but as I found out with the Sammy G3, that's simply not true. I dropped an SIII two days after getting it and shattered the screen from the impressive height of 2'. Meanwhile wifey's dropped her S5 so many times she can't count and it's still alive and kickin'.

So much of dropping current phones is luck, as to whether or not it is damaged. A lot depends on the surface it is dropped on (obviously, the harder and more uneven the surface, typically the greater chance of damage). While they do try to engineer phones to survive drops, most any phone can be damaged by any drop -- if it hits the phone in the "right" spot.
