Last I checked, custom ROMs don't just enable the Sprint Hotspot. They use this app instead. That app has been around much longer than the Evo has, which is where Sprint Hotspot debuted on Android. It currently doesn't support and Galaxy S models, so we will be waiting a bit for this to work. I doubt Sprint is losing money on it as its funds they never could get from other devices. I would believe they were losing money if people were hacking the Sprint App like they do with the VZW app onto Sprint Pre's, or if the app were available on all Sprint Smartphones like the Moment and Hero. I don't have a problem for them charging for it. Its cheaper than a mifi as you get your phone and hotspot, and the service is cheaper (30 vs 60). But its only available currently on phones they are already charging a higher monthly fee for. I'd say they aren't too worried about it.
Yeah... whether it was intentional on their part or not (in a "making the money back sense) they are getting tons more back anyway by charging extra for something that a huge majority of the country isn't receiving yet. I'm sure they aren't related, but in the end, Sprint giveth and Sprint taketh away
