Just got a CR-48

I applied first thing Wednesday morning. Nothing yet, but the tracker says that one has already delivered to my town and another one is in shipment now. It's not a very big town, full of retired folks, so I feel pretty hopeful still.

Strangely, the one already delivered shows Overnight shipping and that it both shipped and was delivered on the 9th, but the one still in transit is showing Ground shipping and n/a for the ETA. (Edit: This one also shows that it shipped on the 10th, yesterday.)

Truthfully, right now I am stuck on a 9 inch netbook, which is only even usable because I slapped Ubuntu on it and wiped Windows. I could put more RAM in it or even buy a real computer if I had any cash, but for the moment, this is the best I can do. Most if not all of what I need it for is web-based already or there are web apps available, so getting one of these Chrome OS notebooks could literally change my life if it just simply works. I'm not sure how much longer I can keep myself from throwing this netbook at a wall.

Well....a bunch of Google employees came to my university a few months back and gave a talk on chrome os (and a bit about a machine running it, but didn't show it as it was still under wraps at the moment), and they were saying that the thing had a switch under the battery that you could use to load an unsigned OS on there (even a more traditional linux distro), so it may be related to that?

Ya there is a dev switch under a piece of black tape. There is also a slot for something else.

I applied on Friday. All I can do is wait with baited breath to see if they send it to me. You didn't get a confirmation email did you?

I skimmed through the terms of service when I first booted up, but I believe in the terms of service when you boot up it says something about not selling it. I'll check it out later tonight. I'd imagine that they wouldn't be too happy if people were getting free laptops that were meant to be used to test the OS only for people to sell it and make money off them...

As far as the post about it being underwhelmed, I guess just like everything else opinions will vary. I personally love it. This is not meant to replace a traditional laptop by any means. However I feel this can easily replace the traditional netbook. Personally I hate netbooks, with a deep passion down to my core actually. They're almost useless. The specs on almost all of them would have been great 2 years ago. They're painfully slow by today's standards. While the specs on the CR-48 aren't anything special, since there's not a full on OS like Windows it doesn't NEED to have crazy specs. Also it's portability is very important to this laptop. Remember, it's supposed to replace netbooks, not full on laptops. Netbooks small and portable size is very important. Chrome OS is a perfect replacement for a Windows or even Linux netbook.. While it may be extremely simple and basic, I"m sure for those that are looking for a netbook would have no problem with it and could easily get used to it. I've had as many as 10 tabs opened and didn't see that much of a drop in performance. It's not until I have tabs that are heavy with flash advertisements n stuff where I'll notice a drop in performance. I have problems with Youtube videos once in a while, sometimes getting really bad. But I've also used the webcam to broadcast on an online talk show and it was absolutely flawless. As a matter of fact as I was broadcasting I saw plenty of comments about how clear the picture was and how great the framerate was. The site I did this on is Shovio.com, which is all flash, and intensive flash at that So I suspect that the issues people have with flash are not hardware related, but software related. I guess time will tell. But if I can flawlessly broadcast on such a flash heavy site like Shovio but have issues on a simple youtube video then there's no reason to think it's software instead of hardware.

Adobe said they would be releasing a patch for flash player to increase performance. You didn't receive an email notification prior to shipment did you? A lot of other people said they didn't

Nope. I came home and my sister in law said I got a package. I thought it was my new knee brace. Nope.. it was the CR48. I was SO confused lol. I must have signed up for this like a year ago or something. Because I honestly dont ever remembering signing up for this at all

Oh...the only three going to utah are not coming to my city according to that list. :( Sad. Oh well, life goes on.

dont get your hopes down to much, im not sure these are credible because they contradict themselves for my city. one tracker says two are coming to my city while the other says only one is :/

Oooooweeeee I see my city and exact zip code! Oh man... gotta calm down... A bit excited...

Did anyone else from Ashburn, VA apply for one of these? please only be one person...

I have a feeling that these trackers are faker than heidi montag, but they sure get my heart pounding. Theres quite a few headed to san diego.

I sure hope so....as mentioned above.

It also makes me nervous that I didn't pass their 'quiz'...just because I don't do the normal things people do on the internet (listen to music for example, actually I don't really do that at all, desktop or internet, only on a portable device, when I don't want to listen to something else), that doesn't mean I don't use it all the time...sigh, oh well. I guess if I don't get one, I can always hack it onto another laptop. It won't be as cool, and I certainly won't be using it like I would if I actually got one, but at least I can help out with it's development. :)

I just wonder how long it takes from sending the application, to shipping, to delivered.

Why do you do this to us google!!
