Just got a tab!

Exactly. I have another early upgrade soon. Thinking about using it on the bionic and selling it the same day for like $500 and taking that and putting towards the tab 2.

Yeah, I saw this. However, if I was to switch from my EVO, I would go to a "dumbphone," one that I would not use for anything other than phone calls. This way I would avoid the extra fee. Plus, I can simply switch phones, and do not have to do anything with a contract.

I'm kind of interested in doing the Dumb-Phone/Tab combo, and saving $10.00 a month. I have an upgrade on one of my lines I was planning on using toward an iPhone. If that doesn't work out, I may sell it and get a 3G Galixy Tab, and activate one of my old dumb phones in place of the iPhone.

I've been using just around 1GB of data a month on my DX, so I think the $20.00 plan on VZW will work for me.

I really hope the Galaxy Tab 1 drops in price some more when they announce the Xoom.

I have the 2GB contract on my Tab, and really don't use it much at all. Most places, especially work and home, I am on wifi. I like the data for when I am on the road, or places where I cannot get wifi. I think it is well worth the price. Even at the current price, I personally think it is still a good deal.

It will drop more. You can always see if they will price match sprint. I think they are at 300 now.

Curney,

You have the t mobile tab right. Can you make it a wifi hot spot so I could use my laptop through it or can the tab not do that. I might get the t mobile data plan it is priced pretty good pretty much like virgin mobile.

Yup. I tether (wifi hotspot) my laptop to it for work. The program I use for tethering is Barnacle which requires root but that's super easy to do. Its just running a program called z4 root once on the tab. I don't think you have to be rooted to tether with the hotspot app that is built in to Froyo, you just need to get to it. All the carriers either hide it or strip itbout. There is an app in the market called Quick Settings which gives you access to it. Super easy either way

Last night I tried to pre-order an iPhone, but they would not allow a 1 year contract, so I passed. Now I'm really tempted to do the dumb phone Tab combo. I'll probably wait till after MWC and see if the Galaxy Tab drops in price for VZW before I jump.

If I go that route, I will still have an upgrade available, when something new gets my attention.... ;-)

Why do I have to be a tech-junky?

Verizon is supposed to be getting a slightly improved tab pretty soon. 1.2ghz, 5mp camera, lte.

Loving my new tab. Couple questions

What programs are people using for word processing? I want to type some papers and Im almost thinking of just using gmail.

I went to menu, settings, sound and disabled the feedback settings but the keyboard keeps making a horrible noise. Any way to disable?

I saw that swiftkey demoed a new tablet keyboard and was wondering if there are any keyboards that split for tablets. The size makes it a bit hard to thumb type in portrait.

My mother bought me an iPad at bestbuy. The iPad never left from behind the counter. I returned it for the tab and plan on returning this for the xoom. That might have changed as this tab is pretty bad ass. The xoom will have to really knock my socks off.

TIA

Edit; and is there a way to calibrate the compass? Or the rotation sensitivity from portrait to landscape?

Just Got My Tab. Bought it from Bestbuy as an open box item for $425 with no activation fee or monthly carrier fee. I told the kid that helped me straight up, I have a DroidX rooted with free hotspots and I want to use the Tab for wifi only.... cool kid...didn't charge me the carrier monthly start up fee...bought it straight out. We also were sharing advice on bypassing the activation screen. Well i love everything about it.... I went with the Sprint version because I like the white back on it. Its already rooted with the sprint activation screen bypassed so I can use it for wifi only. So at home I have my routers wifi signal and on the road I have it wirelessly tethered to my Dx. You gotta love Android. :p For me its the perfect size for traveling. It fits in my jacket pocket or even in my jeans pocket. I thought the size would be to close to my phone but its actually a perfect size for a carry around tab. My DroidX actually feels small in my hands now.

Sweet cw glad to see you got one. I ended up selling my sprint one and got the tmob one so I could put custom roms and kernels. Plus I got clockworkmod on it. I love this tab. It gets better everyday.

Besides the Cynogen that's in ACs news from yesturday, do you know of any roms or ways to overclock the Sprint version? I'm waiting on Cynogen to becomes more stable before I mess with it.

There should be think free office installed. Works fine for me

The keyboard noise is part of the keyboard you are using. Use a different kb and that will go away or be an option.

Try thumb keyboard. It is designed for tablets and is in t he market.

Bauxite made a OC kernel over in the xda forum, some people said it was unstable. I never had a problem w/ it. There is a guy bboush I think that is developing some. Not much support wise for the CDMA tabs.

It's looking like there is a little development picking up. I am unable to find any ROMS with 100% functionality. I did see the post on CM7 and am very excited to try this when its close to 100%. Any ROMwould be nice especially if built with overclock scripts. If I've read right z4root works. There isn't a 100% working clockwork recovery? For Verizon Tab. I am coming from DroidX and am guessing the bootloader is locked on this as well.

If I do root will it install superuser and spare parts just like DroidX? I am assuming it would just want to get everything straight in my head before plunging. Would programs like DroidX/2 overclocker work by Jrummy? The DroidX and SGT have same kernal 'cause both are on froyo.

Is this about right? Trying to get caught up.

Edit; but the have different processors. Is this a problem?

There is one guy over at XDA that did get clockwork working. Look for the threads by Boushh. He has a kernel and rom that seem pretty stable and work really well. His kernel is called Voodoo and his rom is called K-leanmod.

Z4Root will install superuser. I used Z4Root on both my tabs. For the bootloader he mentions to download Verizon Tab Bootstrapper and that will help you convert your partitions to EXT4. Once that is done clockworkmod should w/ w/ no problems. not for sure about using the OC from Jrummy. You could give it a try and see what it does. Just make sore you pull a copy of the OG kernel on your tab so you can flash back if it does not work.

Thank you sir! I did read up on the thread above about the OC Kernal and will read up on the rest. Some new stuff for me as I've never swapped a Kernal. Is swapping a Kernal as simple as Downloading it and installing through clockwork like any other Rom or .zip? Or is this an adb thing?

Edit; I found those two threads you mentioned and it looks that simple! Very exciting. I just can't do it yet. I need to see what the Xoom is going to be like. Though if I reflash my backup made prior to flashing the Rom it should return me to stock, then just unroot with z4 right?

Are you running his ROM? It reads nice.

@NewAge,

It is very easy to flash. I use heimdall to do it. You just put you tab into download mode, install the heimdall drivers, open up heimdall front end, in heimdall goto zimage, browse for the zimage and hit start and it will flash. Whateve kernel you get extract the zimage by using winzip or another extraction program. once it is flashed the tab will shutoff, unhook it and turn it back on and your good to go. I only use clockworkmod to backup system, restore and install roms.

I would just leave the tab rooted. yep you can just flash your backup and it will put you back to stock. No I am running a GSM rom from alterbridge called OVERCOME. once CM7 gets pretty stable I will switch to that.
