Hey guys I just purchased a used Galaxy Nexus, I was assuming, and hoping, it was a stock phone. But I don't think it is. Can you tell me what has been done to it and how to get it back to stock by the picture I have here of the phone info?

I have no clue what I am doing here :/

Thanks

yes, you have a rooted vzw gnex running jelly belly 2.2.

if you want to put it back to stock you can hit the factory images thread in the rooting subforum: http://forums.androidcentral.com/ve...1360-factory-images-verizon-galaxy-nexus.html

or you can use wug's toolkit to go back to stock: http://forums.androidcentral.com/ve...us-root-toolkit-v1-5-1-updated-7-12-12-a.html

if you have a pc you'll have to install the samsung drivers - use wugs for that.

and a mod can move it to the root section you dont need to delete the thread. :)

Thanks.

Is the Jelly Bean I am running legit? Like a version from Google that I would be getting the exact same thing later anyway or something modified?

If I understand right you are giving me two separate options? Both do the same thing essentially?

Which would you recommend for someone who can pick up computer related stuff but has never done anything like this before?

I just really prefer to have the phone as if it came from the factory and hasn't been messed with at all for now.

the jelly bean rom you have on there now is a port from the jelly bean preview that came with the io copies of nexus 7. it's not official, it's experimental. there are jelly bean roms being built from source now if you're interested, you can check out dmmarck's jelly bean now thread stickied up top.

the options i have you are basically manual vs automated. the worst part about all of this, if you're on a pc, is setting up the drivers correctly. wugs will do it for ya, you just have to input a few things and it does it. if you're interested in reading up on it, the manual option is cool and not that hard, but if you just want to go back to stock and forget about this whole root/rom/bootloader business, just use wugs and don't think about it again :)

i'm not sure, but wugs may not relock the bootloader for you. if it doesnt, it's very easy to do and you can check out cyberwarrior's (or dmmarck's i forget) thread on locking/unlocking the bootloader for that.

so that's that, any questions of course feel free to ask in here or in the respective thread for whatever it is you get stuck on or need clarification for.

Thanks, it all sounds very intimidating but I'll read up on it later tonight or tomorrow and hopefully it makes some sense to me and I feel comfortable proceeding.

One last question for now which might be a stupid one, so both methods do the same thing, one automated, one not... so then is my phone essentially back to stock or OEM condition? As if nobody ever "messed" with it?

yeah once you ahve the drivers installed you'll flash the factory image for 4.04 (the current stock image), then you relock the bootloader in fastboot or however, and you're back to stock like nothing ever happened.

I downloaded the toolkit. To me it looks like I first want to go through the full drivers installation guide? Lots of steps for sure.

One through that I simply click the "flash stock + unroot" button?

Also for selecting phone type I know I am CDMA Verizon but do I pick custom ROM Jelly Bean or Android 4.1 Build JRN84D?

Thanks again :)

yeah do the drivers installation - should be pretty simple but i dunno, i have a mac so toolkits dont work for me. i do it all manually. plus, we dont need drivers on a mac.

hten you're gonna do the flash stock and unroot, and after that you want to relock the bootloader if you want it 100 percent back to retail settings.

as for the phone type - honestly i dont know. as i said, mac, never used wugs kit, but i'm sure the OP of that thread has directions for it? if not, someone will chime in and tell ya how to get it done :)

Ok great, asked over there. I will tackle this process tonight or sometime this weekend.

So I assume with my phone back to retail settings I will get the Jelly Bean OTA and other OTAs when they are released? I also am assuming my phone will not get OTAs in it's current state?

That's a correct assumption. Am I the only one who's going to say you may not want to go back to stock? :D Perhaps you should try a gNex still running stock ICS and compare? I understand it's not for everybody but I'm confident once you realize how easy (and fun) it is to run stable/reliable custom roms you won't want to run stock again. Personally, I'm waiting for AOKP to release their JB based rom based on the source because I love their many customizations and they do amazing work, but I've heard a lot of great things about current JB roms. Eh, if you go back to stock and just unlock/root again if you change your mind.

I want to experience it it stock first. I mean if this was a legit straight from Google, identical to the OTA that will be released version of JB I guess I'd have less of a problem with it.

As you said, I can always mess with it later, but feels weird that I never got the OEM experience at this point.

You really, truly are not missing anything using it as a stock device. But I understand where you are coming from. I think most folks might say you are better off just leaving it as it is, save yourself all the steps, because there is a really good chance you will end up right back where you are now! But either way, enjoy your gnex, it's an awesome phone.

There are plenty of threads here in the gnex section of AC that will provide more than enough info to get you wherever you want to be. The folks in this forum are truly the nicest, most helpful folks I've encountered in the Android forum world so far.

Well maybe I am missing the whole point of this. Isn't the version of JB currently on my phone bootleg? I mean if it's the exact same thing that will come OTA then I have no problem leaving it.

It is not from the source code, it is what folks call a "port" of the JB code from the GSM Version of the GNEX...so in essence, I guess you can call it a "bootleg" version of JB. But I am running the exact same thing on my gnex that you have on yours (except I am actually still on version 2.1), and I love it. Incredibly smooth, great battery life, cool features like Google Now and Google Voice Search, etc. Between you and me, you would not notice much, if any difference between the ROM on your phone and the full blown JB AOSP ROMs that come from the source code (which are nearly if not the exact same thing as the OTA from Verizon/Samsung for JB, whenever that actually gets released). I'm guessing some other folks may have other opinions about the versions of JB floating around, and if the ones from Source are actually better or not than the Ported versions like what you and I are running.

So again, it may be worth just keeping your phone where it is, instead of reverting back to the "official" stock ICS, and then waiting for the OTA of JB (which could be a month or two or three away)...unless you are having some issues with how your phone is running. You're in a good place(rooted and ROM'd), you will easily be able to flash new cool stuff (ROMS, kernels, cool modifications) once you feel like you want to try it out after reading up about all of it as much as possible. If not ready to flash anything else, you really don't need to, you are already rocking one of the best devices around with the latest and best OS (JB), that no other Android Phones even have yet, and a lot of those folks with other phones would sell their grandmother to have JB on their device! ;)

You could always make a nandroid (a backup) of your current JB rom and flash a stock 4.0.4 rom to see what "official" ICS is all about. Having used the term "bootleg" I'm thinking you may just not understand that custom roms have everything the official google roms have only more options and customizations and are just as stable (at least major roms...you can be a guinea pig if that's your thing...nearly impossible to brick this phone they say). You can mix and match roms/kernels if you like and really make a beast of your phone compared to stock. Better battery, faster, smoother, cooler....the list goes on and on. Check out the stickies at the top of this section. Obviously, you can skip the unlocking/rooting part and just read up on flashing. It's too simple once you've done it once or twice (or a million times like some of these guys/gals). I'm not sure which recovery you have but it's probably CWM (hopefully touch). Download rom manager from the play store and select reboot into recovery (or vol +/- and power). That's the only thing I use rom manager as I've heard of crackflashers wearing out their buttons lol.
