I started this thread and my phone is also not unlocked. I have a carrier locked version. My camera app was updated. My auto focus has improved. Hopefully they continue to refine it.

which leads me to believe this is not the patch we are looking for (in your best obi wan kenobi voice and hand wave).
again, i could definitely be wrong, but all information aside, i just don't see enough there for me to believe this was the highly anticipated patch.
even with the patch, focus is hot garbage. it's almost as if samsung spent so much time trying to focus (no pun intended) on distance, that they totally forgot about how the camera would act when something is directly in front of it =/.
perfect example....here's me holding the camera, and the autofocus is still super-dodgy, and when something is close enough, it simply won't register.

This is the exact same "camera" update that all the other carrier and unlocked units have received. If your camera software ends in 98 now, this is it.

They should never have shipped a phone with a problem like that. Seems hard to believe they never noticed that in their internal testing.

Does it make sense? No
Does it surprise me? Also No
All of these OEMs do it, and if it it's not the camera it's something else. That doesn't mean I'm giving them a pass, it just seems to have become the norm.
There is probably a disconnect between the various departments of OEMs because many departments in companies operate as silos.

They knew the problem but probably though they can push day zero update which addresses this and to reviewers, but things don't complete as planned. For Samsung they probably thought they could still ship with this issue and not worth postpone the release and all the planning that went into release. Not saying that's the right choice, every company makes this go/no-go call and for Samsung this wasn't a big enough deal to postpone the release. Postponing the release is a big deal and I'm pretty sure they weighed the pro/cons for postponing the release vs possible complaints about focus issues.

I feel they HAD to know about the autofocus problem at least... you have youtubers that are given maybe a week most and they are immediately noticing it and Samsung development, you hope, has been testing the phone for months out in the field and not notice it??
Watching this video and really hit me at the 6:20min mark...
I honestly think the Ultra probably has a good camera. Cool zoom feature to a degree... gimmicky at 100x. But I'll guess the camera "overall" is better than the S10 version. You'd hope so being a newer gen phone. Is it better than the S20+?? That's what kills it for me... to charge $200 more and it's questionable if it's $200 better phone.
But the issues exist like auto focus which should be sorted in if not this update then the next couple. But the narrow depth of field... that doesn't sound like it will be fixed.
It has been said by so many reviewers this narrow depth of view and how (like in this video) he said "you can't grab a whole coffee mug (in focus)" and watching this video really made me realize...
This is Samsung's own 108mp sensor and basically first gen and for whatever reason they cheaped out and didn't add dual aperture. Chances are you'll see the 108mp sensor, if they decide to continue with it, with dual aperture in the S21. That's my guess. I HOPE if they stick with this setup in the Note, that they can go dual aperture by the Note 20 eh? I think the sw updates will improve it greatly but this phone definitely didn't change photography.
Samsung had their chance to wow people at release. But they released with note saying an update is on the way... before the release date. The reviewers have moved on and now they are being wowed by phones like the Huawei P40 Pro calling it the Ultra killer... and they take night mode to another level... and the Oppo Find X2 with 124 dxo mark. Samsung will still be at the top because the Huawei is pretty much useless in the states without Google Play and... I don't know anything about the Oppo.

That's relative to what you used. The Ultra does some things better most, sone things things the same as most and some things not as good as some.

Is 5G part of your plan or included with service?
On Verizon I still can't choose 5G but that may be because it's not on my plan

Does that mean that your carrier will now start charging more for 5G by giving 5G owners the option to turn it on??
