Just picked up Nexus 7; I have wifi, but can't set up.

Hi, I picked up a Nexus 7 from a co-worker today. I was able to do a factory reset, expecting to go through the Android set up process, but did not see it. Is there something that I need to do to get this working?

Under the details, it shows I have Android version 4.1.1 Model number says "Full Android on Grouper"

Welcome to Android Central! Your co-worker probably rooted it and flashed a custom ROM. I don't know much about rooting, so hopefully someone else can help you in more detail. I would suggest to look at any thread about reflashing stock images. That should bring every thing back to normal, and delete any info on the device.

4.1.1 is a vital clue actually.

For the majority of Nexus 7s, 4.1.2 is the earliest version offered in Factory Images. https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images

But Random Phantasmagoria show that there were Nexus 7 models before September 2012 that had 8GB or 16GB and THOSE came with 4.1 or 4.1.1. Nexus 7 (2012) Firmware – nakasi | Random Phantasmagoria

I would surmise you have an early model N7. Models made after September 2012 can not safely flash the 4.1 or 4.1.1 images. The early models, however, CAN flash the later OS versions safely.

How much Storage do you have onboard? That may be a clue if it's a first run tablet. Might be cool to know.

Otherwise, like Golfdriver said, I'd simply unlock the boot loader and flash a Factory Image.

If the device was ever rooted the state would be "unlocked." You have to unlock the bootloader to root the device or flash it. If it is unlocked that is just an indicator. Some unlock the bootloader and never mod further, like root, custom kernel, custom ROM. It may be done just to allow flashing images.

The Nexus is a 32GB one and when I did the power/volume down button it says that it is unlocked. I would like to use it in the "stock factory" mode. When I do the power/volume down thing, it shows:
1) Modem only mode
2) Start
3) Restart bootloader
4) Recovery mode
5) Power off (I know this isn't it)
6) Start (probably not either)

What do I do?

It's good that your bootloader is unlocked. That saves a step and means that you can flash images..

Get the NRT. Nexus Root Toolkit v1.8.3 | WugFresh

Once you have that installed it will ask what model you have. Select Nexus 7 (Wi-Fi Tablet) from the drop down. (Not the Nexus 7 v2.)

When you select the Android build you are running it should be NAKASI-GROUPER: Android 4.1.1 - Build JRO03S. That S is the only one authorized for 32 GB models.

Let the toolkit download any other files it needs.

Power on your device as normal.

Go to - Settings and scroll down to the bottom. Second entry from the bottom should be Developer Options. If not, you have to enable developer mode. Settings > About tablet - then find Build Number. Tap on that entry quickly 7 times to enable Developer mode.

Settings > Developer Options > USB Debugging needs to be checked.

Download this file: https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/nakasi-ktu84l-factory-0e21238f.tgz It is the latest Factory Image 4.4.3 for Nexus 7 2012 WiFi. Or pick another image from the repository. https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images I always thought 4.3 was a very solid release. Maybe research a bit on versions? Make sure you get an image for your model: nakasi - NOT nakasig

Plug the tablet into your computer's USB port. Let the computer set up drivers if it needs to.

Open Nexus Root Toolkit. Find the Flash Stock + Unroot button. Check the space for "Device is on/Normal" and click the Flash Stock button. A new window opens up, "Which Factory Image.". Select "I downloaded a factory image myself that I would like to use instead" and press the OK button. When the "Choose a Google Factory Image" window opens, navigate to the image you downloaded and select that. Click open. Follow the prompts and the Toolkit will do the rest. Your tablet will be completely stock at the Android version you selected except for the unlocked bootloader. I suggest you leave it unlocked in case you need to flash an image again, although the Toolkit will relock the bootloader with the OEM Lock button if you so desire.

I have some big problems now. I followed all of the steps RumoredNow kindly provided and everything was going nicely, but at the last minute, the Nexus got disconnected and now I can not boot the darn thing up. I keep getting a "Booting failed" error. When I plug it to my computer via the USB, my computer doesn't even recognize it is there. It will make the sound like it recognizes something was plugged in, but when I click on "my computer" it does not show up.

I also just tried using the Nexus Root Toolkit under the status "Soft-bricked/Bootloop" and had no luck, but I am not sure if I did it correctly. It went through the process, but nothing happened. When I
Flash-stock + Unroot, I am on the bootloader screen, should it be in Modem Only, Start, recovery mode, or restart bootloader screen?
Did I just brick this thing? Please help....
