Just rooted - first impressions

Got mine the 24th. Rooted it the 26th. I had never done anything like that before, but the autonooter from nookdevs made it super easy. I have a couple questions though. First, after rooting i had a problem that made me need to use the hardware method to erase and deregister. When i rebooted it appeared that although no longer rooted or containing a any books or apps from rooting, there was still some of the boot files that are put on when the autonooter script runs. I've seen mention of needing to"wipe" the book before resetting it. How is this done?

Second, yesterday i noticed that my previously-functioning youtube app has stopped working. I go into extras and tap youtube and the screen flashes black qs if youtube is starting to load, then the extras screen slides back over it from thee side. Youtube's mobile website works fine just the app doesn't. I've. Powered down and restarted but it hasn't helped. Any ideas?

Thanks

PS. I found and read this thread and wrote this message all from my nook color! Love this thing!

so dare i say it....i have been looking into an ipad. i dont hate apple, i have a mbpro, but i love my X and android too. the ipad was for nothing more than convenience. quick web surfing, emailing, multimedia (vids, pix, music)...so....now with the nook color rooted...is there any reason for me to buy the ipad and spend double what the nook costs? the 7'' screen would be fine for what i want to do, and maybe even preferred over the 12''. more convenient.

In all honesty, I would say different strokes for different folks. My wife has had an iPad since April and while it is truly lovely, a rooted NC fits the bill perfectly for me. I use it with my jail broken iPhone so I have wireless internet, email, web, and all of the apps that I used on the iPad at half the cost. As I looked at the two, a rooted NC was a better value plus is lighter and easier to pack when I travel. No matter what, there are always compromises and for me a rooted NC with my jail broken iPhone is a reasonable compromise.

THIS SOUNDS LIKE EXACTLY THE TYPE OF USE AND SITUATION I WANT IT FOR. oops caps. other than the iphone, i have aa rooted X with wireless tether. the NC seems liek the right choice for me withe verything considered.

Hey all,

I'm thinking of getting a NC after playing around with it a little yesterday.

Here's a question for you all... I know that the NC will have access to the android market in early 2011. I'm not the biggest techie, so if I do get it, would it be worth just waiting until the android market is available or will there still be major differences between rooted nook and the updates? The employee who helped me said that they may eventually get a flash update as well.

Thanks, -SPV

I had same YouTube problem. I resolved it by using Astro file manager. I first backed up the app with Astro then deleted it in Nook color tools > all settings > manage applications. Then I reinstalled the backup I made and it worked.

Same boat as you. Got a MacBook but i don't like itunes or having to be Tied into Apple's approval of what apps I can or can't use. Plus I'm a geek so I like being able to mess around with things.

Ok, got astro file manager but i can't find the youtube .apk to backup. Can you tell me where to find it? Looked in system/app but its not there unless under another name

When in astro hit menu then tools then application manager.

That did it! Thanks a lot.

regarding my other question, from xda-developers nook color forum, there is a faq that explains the two steps more clearly than the nook color portal. first your reboot counter has to hit 8, then you have to do the hardware erase and deregister. havent tried it yet, but it is more than what i did in the past, so i expect it will work.

I hope you'll keep posting your findings Nick. How about Facebook and Twitter apps like Tweetdeck?

Facebook, Twitter, and Tweetdeck are awesome on the NookColor.
I just got one yesterday, Nooted it and it's like a mini tablet. Even can watch Youtube videos on it..
The NookDev team did a great job of documenting how to Root the Nook and even made an easy Nooter app.

Part of the process of using Auto-Nooter gives you soft keys (attached pic below) which gives you home, menu, back, search. If you press the Softkeys arrow (circled in red) and it brings up the menu bar (in a red square).

Android 2.1 (2.2 supposed to come late Janurary)

So far I haven't seen this. Seems to multitask, just haven't gotten the hot swap to work yet (which I never use anyway).

I've gotten mine to do the long press to bring up a list of recent apps.. was in the softkey settings I believe.

Anyone know of a good app foe editing ms word docs, especially a free app if available?

It's DEFINITELY not free, and I don't even know if it works on the Nook Color, but I have been using Docs 2 Go full version (free didn't work well for me) for over a year now with my Droid 1 and Droid 2. I bought it on a whim after free didn't work well, because I had used it heavily in the Palm OS and WinMO platforms with great success. After purchasing the full version, I TRULY love it. It has opened everything I have thrown at it, and truly been a life saver for things I never would have imagined doing with a cell phone until a vital situation popped up. The free version had a lot of bugs for me. Wouldn't open a lot of files, and when it did I had strange problems with display and spacing etc. The full version fixed all my qualms with the free version. Just a thought. It's definitely expensive (I bought it on sale) and it's a gamble with the 15 minute return window now, but that's just my .02. I would buy it over and over if I had to.

Docs to go is where i've been leaning but with the froyo update coming plus an eventual b&n market, i will probably wait. For now, at least til i know if it works

I've got Docs to Go full version as well (since I have it on my evo), might try QuickOffice as well (freebie).

Anybody figure out how to make LauncherPro shortcuts work?

There's a thread over on XDA regarding this. Basically the only way to do it right now is to set up your shortcuts using LP on another Android device and make a backup, then put the SD card in your NC and restore the backup.

You could always try a different launcher app. I love LP on my EVO, but Zeam seems to work best on the NC.
