I just had a chat with Verizon about retiring my BB Curve and getting a Droid 3 and tried to preorder and they stated they are not taking preorders on them. I told the Verizon phone rep (Antoine) I was concerned about my unlimited BB data plan being transferred after the July 7th date, and he told me it would be grandfathered over to a Droid 3 when released.

That's different from what I had heard here as the BB and other smart phone plans were different part numbers , so I thought I would share...

I would visit your local store and confirm it, but I know from my BB days I had the BIS plan but that was unlimited data they just liked to charge the BES customers more. Hit a store and double check but it sounds like you would be ok, but the devil is in the details.

Got to be honest, I've never been shy when asking for a supervisor/manager and getting a case elevated, so now that I have this guy's name and time of the call, I will get the grandfathering done.

I emailed them and this was the result.

If I use my new every 2 and upgrade to a new device after July 7, would I have to switch out of unlimited data and to a tiered plan?

For those currently using a basic (feature) phone. If you upgrade to a new Smartphone after the data plans change, then you will be required to move to one of the new usage based data plans.

For customers who currently have Smartphones with an unlimited plan, if they upgrade to a new Smartphone after the data plans change, then they will not be required to move to the new pricing at this time. Those customers will be able to keep their unlimited data plans.

You can always lock in a phone right before July 7th, buy it at Best Buy they give you 30 days to exchange it (15 days to return it to cancel) this way you could get either the D3 or with luck the Bionic in July and still get the discounted pricing.

when I went to return my Charge (found out that gem of info about not needing to lock in a 4G) and my friend who works there told me they took it out of their system recently the BB and smartphone difference for unlimited so now it is solely one type of smartphone data with no blackberry distinction.
