Keeping screen on while looking at it?

The best you can do is set a longer Display ON time with the Display Sleep setting.

That was a feature on my old Samsung Galaxy S3, but it was a crapshoot whether it was going to work from one time to the next so I finally just disabled it.

Ok. so I have my screen shutting off after 15 seconds to preserve battery. If I turn that up, is there an easier way of turning 9f screen manually without having to use the power button all the time? On my Moto Z Force I could use the fingerprint sensor to do that.

Press the power button to lock it. But if you do that, it locks even if you have it set to stay unlocked, like at home.

Yes, obviously. I'm asking about an alternative method, like I had on my Moto Z.

I'm one of those people that lives on his cell phone. (At least whenever I'm away from Windows 10 on my Dell XPS 15 laptop.) I've found that the fingerprint sensor on my Pixel 2 XL along with Smart Lock gives me everything I need for operating convenience. I keep my Display Sleep set on 2 minutes of inactivity.

Sound promising. I'll give it a shot. Hopefully doesn't use too much battery. Thanks
You do take a slight hit on battery but it's quite small from my experience. I paid for the app and have been using it for a week with great success

Does get annoying to keep tapping at screen to keep phone awake. Samsung's stay awake when looking at phone feature was something I thought came with all Android phones.
