I'm not officially posting kernel alerts yet, but this one is too good to pass up. We now have an official version of Clockwork Recovery!

Source: [KERNEL] ClockworkMod Kernel - xda-developers

Features
Installing this kernel gives your Epic full Clockwork support (up until we have only had a hacked together version).

Quick guide:
0) Backup phone
1) Flash this kernel by putting the .zip on your SD card and installing from old Clockwork Recovery
2) Reboot and download ROM Manager from the market
2) From ROM Manager select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" and select Samsung Epic
3) It will download the updated Clockwork Recovery - after which you can press "Reboot into Recovery"
4) Wait for phone to reboot and the auto-install of updated Clockwork Recovery
5) Your phone should now reboot
6) Now you have the full/updated version of Clockwork Recovery. All the buttons have been fixed in this version (volume rocker for up/down, camera button as action button) and it is fully compatible with the ROM Manager. Hallelujah!

Note: these fixes to Clockwork Recovery and ROM Manager are dependent on this kernel being installed. If you want to install a different kernel after this, make sure it supports the new Clockwork Recovery/ROM Manager.

New kernels that also offer Clockwork Recovery/ROM Manager support:
[Kernel] FluffKernel Epic 4G version 1.0.1-5 8.1 mflops now Rom Manager Compatiable - xda-developers
[KERNEL] MixUp - Stock With Overclock (9/21/2010 - Stoopid Fast w/ Clockwork) - xda-developers

I get a down load error, also the epic recovery isn't listed on his website

Koush may not have updated his website yet as this was released last night. But there is definitely an option to select our specific model from within his ROM Manager (confirmed it myself). I haven't heard of anyone of XDA getting a download error. At what step is the error occurring?

I second this. I saw that too.

updated the instructions on the stickied recovery instructions thread. i made a new guide for people with NO RECOVERIES installed -- a way to install it using the zimage via redbend_ua. I will update the post later with the zip file for those already using the beta clockwork.

thanks!

Had the same thing myself when I was trying it with stock rom. Put back noobnl andromeda rom and tried it again and it worked.

I then booted into the real clockwork recovery, but when it booted up it still lists Kernel version 2.6.29. Should this have changed after adding the clockwork kernel?

I was trying to instal the recovery with a stock kernel and stock recovery, it gives me a download error after selecting the device. I don't think kernel should affect ability to download, install maybe, but not download.

That's right - 2.6.29 is what I showed after installing the ClockworkMod kernel.

You need the ClockworkMod kernel or one based on it to be able to use ROM Manager (and to download Clockwork within it). Install the kernel first and it will work.

I have been having all kinds of problems with the clockwork recovery and mod in general. first off my recovery does not have "choose .zip from sd" so i can't flash anything through the recovery. so then when i found this thread, i downloaded the kernal ( which won't flash through the recovery) so i downloaded rom manager, chose to "flash clockwork recovery" it was successful and says i now have version 2.5.1.0 but when i choose "boot into recovery" it starts installing and then says failed to verify whole-file signature, then it says below that signature verification failed installation aborted. Any ideas? I really just want to find a recovery that will allow me to flash a rom, and so far nothing has worked. oh and by the way if i try to rename whatever rom i'm trying to flash to "update.zip" i get signature verification failed! please help!!!!!!!

You were in stock recovery (blue text), which cannot flash roms/kernels. You need to be in ClockworkMod Recovery (green text).

so then when i found this thread, i downloaded the kernal ( which won't flash through the recovery) so i downloaded rom manager, chose to "flash clockwork recovery" it was successful and says i now have version 2.5.1.0 but when i choose "boot into recovery" it starts installing and then says failed to verify whole-file signature, then it says below that signature verification failed installation aborted. You need root access to install ClockworkMod recovery. Did you root your phone before trying any of this?

you can actually install clockwork mod (CWM =custom recovery for flashing roms) to 2 places on the epic- if you want access to it via 3 button push go to xda epic dev forums and install noobnl one click (found here) of note I did not need root to install this
-if you want rom manager support you need a custom kernel/rom that will support it
Probably the easiest way to get what you want is install the CWM using noobls one click then pick a new rom that you want and install it using that (access it via 3 button push). Once you have the custom rom installed you can use rom manager- hope that helps

The one click install does actually work... use the last.bat, not the first.bat... the key is before you start, obviously make sure you are set to USB Debug mode, and in addition, go into settings and manually unmount the SD... at that point, the process worked flawlessly for me... when it is processing you won't be able to tell it's working and it will look like it's having trouble reading certain things, but then my phone restarted, and 60 seconds later I got the "hit any key" mssg on the PC in the DOS box and I knew it had completed... when I rebooted, the text was green instead of blue in the bootloader, and I was able to load up a new ROM no problem for the first time... good luck...
