Keyboard on 4.2.2 vs 2.3.4

Well, my old Motorola Droid X took a fall a few weeks ago, and I finally decided to buy a new phone. I wound up with a Google Nexus 4.

I love everything about the upgrade... except the apparent downgrade in functionality of the keyboard o.o

The old-style keyboard had most of the special characters under the regular letters, you pressed and held, and you could get underscores and such... in the newer version, I have to go to 2 different menus to get to the underscore, and then tap back into the alphanumeric keyboard. Admittedly, I think this new system could grow on me, so it's not such a big deal...

But the big problem I have is the backspace key... On the old 2.3.4, when I held the backspace, it would delete words at a time, separating at the spaces automatically... this was fantastic. The new backspace works like my computers... except, it also seems to jumble the words before it as it deletes, forcing me to slow down and tap individually...

Is there any way to set the backspace to the old style? I can't seem to find any settings for it anywhere... I'd also like to have my special characters attached to the main keys... but that's less important by far.

Thanks!

Spend the 3 bucks and get SwiftKey. Just do it already.

try some of the asian keyboards they support english as well, or you can try the Go keyboard Im using that one atm it has the swipe txt feature thats really convenient.

If I'm not mistaken, 2.3.4 used a version of Swype. You can also download it again, if you wish. Just not from the Play Store.

It DID work rather well, if I recall. Swiftkey Flow is decent, too.
