PIXEL II XL. Since the Pie upgrade I've been chasing the audio setting for the keypress sounds. I'd prefer to have my keypress sounds just barely audible but the settings I've found only seem to turn the sound off momentarily (comes right back!) or not at all. Could somebody direct me to the correct OS setting?

Stock keyboard, no. (I haven't used one of those, except for initial setup for about a minute, in years.) A replacement (I use Swiftkey, but others would be the same) - in settings - search keyboard and you'll find the keyboard screen. Tap the one you use and there should be settings in there for it.

(You made me look it up. For the Google keyboard, Languages and input/Virtual keyboard/Gboard/Preferences/Sound on keypress enabled/Volume on keypress. Or Haptic feedback on keypress/Vibration strength on keypress.)

I went to the same location. I swear I done this before but it didn't take. Keypress is muted at the moment, now to see if it's sticky!

Have the same issue, my only workaround is to setup a Tasker task to kill the keyboard and relaunch (rooted)
