Been trying to update my tab for almost 2 hours now and it won't pull the update via OTA, so I tried doing it via Kies. Kies keeps timing out and I'm probably nearing my 25th try. Anyone have any solutions?

Understood that Kies is useless, but for those, including me, who haven't received the OTA Kies is an option to update to ICS.

YES it is I had same problem until I found a post that suggested to factory reset tab then uninstall old kies even if you just updated it, install new kies, plug in tab it updates right away BOOM.... Of course you will have to reinstall your apps

Kies has always been a pain in the ?o_O:
I have connected maybe twice on the GT10.1 in almost 2 yrs. The answer is alwats reset; did that 3 times already. I don't have an issue with the wifes 7.0 Plus, it works like a charm. I've been looking for the OTA update since lastnight but no luck and I can't connect to Kies. Any links out there for a download??? PLEASE!

I did a reset in anticipation of the update, so I reinstalled Kies.
Tab connected, and did the update without issue.
After updating the apps included with the tab, and after reinstalling all
of my apps, etc., I tried Kies again.
Tab connected again with no problems.

I did exactly what you told me and it worked like a charm. ICS is freakin nice in tablet form.

Glad to see it worked well for you too!
Yes, ICS is a VERY nIce update to a really cool gadget.
Don't know what it is about this thing, but I love it.
And now it's even better.
Now, what are the chances we'll get some Jelly Bean sweetness?

Most devices that have good tech and specs are usually guaranteed 2 updates (aside from nexus devices which get 3 maybe 4) So I think at some point there will be a jellybean update.

the S3 apparently may get Jellybean by the end of this month, beginning of next which is pretty astonishing if you look at Samsungs history of updating devices. They also said the s2 could get it by years end, and thats when I assume the Tab will get it, if not maybe the beginning of next year.

I said this in another thread, but I honestly think this tab performs better than the Tab2. I think the Tegra 2 may be better than whatever they used in the Tab2 because I took mine to Best buy to compare them and my tab seemed smoother

Which Tab does everyone have? I have the original still on GB and to my knowledge will not be getting ICS OTA. Is this correct?

Yea we have the 10.1 inch galaxy tab, not the original 7 inch tab. You can root and probably put ICS on there though. Can't guarantee how well it will perform though

Sounds promising, thanks for the info.
To tell the truth, I was very happy with my tab on HC, had no problems at all.
But now that I've some experience with flashing, and finally getting Kies to work, and
having ICS installed, which made an already cool gadget even better, I'm getting a bit adventurous!

Finally got Kies to connect with my tab and was able to update. I was just about to give up completely and try to flash via Odin. I figured I'd give it another shot and it finally took. This is after several installs/uninstalls, restarts on both PCs & macs and a few factory resets of the tab itself. I know I could have saved a lot of aggravation, by either flashing or waiting, but Kies was driving me nuts and I couldn't stop trying to get it to work. Now with the update, Kies connects without an issue - of course.

So I have given up on trying to connect via Kies without a factory reset. But without the ability to connect, how do I back up my data on my Tab? My kid will kill me if I lose all of his progress in Angry Birds and other games?

Thanks.

I'm another one that got tired of waiting for the OTA update to show up, so I worked with Kies instead. From past experience, I knew it would be a little tedious to get it to connect. I used a Win7 machine with the latest Kies software from the Samsung website. Then I futzed with the connect and troubleshooting dialogue four or five times, disconnected and reconnected the USB cable as instructed, and for whatever reason, it finally connected. I never did a factory reset, as I don't believe the problem is on the tablet side. I'm pretty sure it is a conflict between the Windows software auto-actions and the Kies software demands. But if you are patient and give it time, it will eventually connect.
Once connected, the update was a total breeze. Just say yes and let it happen.

I used Kies via USB with no problems to upgrade both my Tab 10.1 and my Tab2 7. When I first opened up the Kies version I had installed previously I got a notice to upgrade Kies which failed. So I uninstalled Kies and then installed the latest (Aug. 2012) and had no issues at all with either upgrade.
Remember you also have to wait for your pc to update and install the drivers for each device. If you allow the pc to check Windows Update online it will take a few minutes to do this.
